INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ECOWEEK 2009

It's our pleasure once again this year to support ECOWEEK and the international conference Empowering Youth: Ecology + Leadership + Architecture, taking part in a series of public lectures, screenings and interdisciplinary workshops open to young architects, designers and students, as well as the wider public.

Architecture and Ecology
Buildings currently consume 40% of the energy produced globally and contribute to the emissions of greenhouse gases to the Earth’s atmosphere, causing global warming and climate change, with disastrous effects on the Earth’s ecosystems. Building practice today has failed, with only a few rare exceptions. Today's young generation of architects can't afford to make the same mistakes as previous generations. They represent the future and offer us hope for fundamental changes in the field of architecture, which will lead it to a sustainable future.

The conference gives young professionals and graduate students the opportunity to work side by side with established architects, designers and engineers such as UK architect Ivan Harbour, Director of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (formerly the Richard Rogers Partnership), and Benjamin Gill, Director of BioRegional Consulting in London, and many more specialists from Greece and abroad, and to learn from them the principles and implementation of ecological building and sustainable design.

Conference Theme
The interdisciplinary workshops will focus on the former site of the international airport of Athens in Hellenikon and attempt to re-approach this important Athens site through ecology, locality, community and sustainability. The groups will produce three proposals (with possible variations):

A Metropolitan park of zero waste
A zero-emissions and zero-waste neighbourhood
A combination of the two

Public lectures and screening of documentaries are open and free to the general public.  Some parts of the workshops are also open to the public.

The conference will be held in English. Simultaneous translation will be provided for most lectures.
