Don’t miss this fascinating lecture entitled by Dr Stephen Johnston, Curator at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, which we are organising in collaboration with the National Hellenic Research Foundation as part of a series of talks on the history of mathematics and architecture.
The series of talks will take place from 30 November to 21 December 2010 and will be supported by an exhibition of rare scientific design and measurement instruments from Thanasis Koutrouveli’s personal collection, entitled Circinus: Geometry in Art and Science and curated by Dr Catherine Karela, in collaboration with Oxford University as part of the Hephaestus programme Hephaestus (Hellenic Philosophy, History and Environmental Science Teaching Under Scrutiny) of the 7th EU Framework Programme (RegPot-2008-1).
The theme of the exhibition is the connection between the history of science and the history of the arts, focusing on geometry and its role in the concepts and implementation of creative design. The instruments will be presented as the practical application of a mathematical theory, aiming at guiding the exhibition visitor through design techniques, as well as artistic standards and way of thinking in other fields such as classical architecture.
