INCONVENIENT TRUTHS, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Yet another gloom and doom scenario? Maybe … but maybe not … The thing is that the entire discussion on climate change issues is driven beyond strategic governmental decisions to an ever-more crucial moral and social issue. A number of NGOs (non-governmental organisations), social and green groups are joining forces with world leaders in an attempt to inform the public on issues related to climate change. Part of this international campaign focuses on the understanding that global warming is primarily caused by human activity and that small changes in our everyday life can constitute important steps forward in the survival of our planet. But what do you really know about your own contribution as an individual in the preservation of our natural environment? We therefore invite you to screenings and discussions of the Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth, featuring Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim, in the hope that we may be able to shed some light on your questions, revealing some inconvenient truths, but also trying to provide some of the answers you may need. The discussions and film screening are open to the public.
The event is part of the British Council’s contribution to EcoWeek 2007, which marks 2007 as International Polar Year and focuses on global warming and climate change. Robert Swan –a great contemporary explorer in Athens By the age of 33, he had become the first person to walk to both the North and South poles. His 900-mile journey 'In the Footsteps of Scott,' across the treacherous Antarctic ice cap to the South Pole stands as the longest unassisted walk ever made. The successful completion of his North and South Pole expeditions marked the beginning of a new phase in his life, shaping a lifetime goal for him – to work for the preservation of the Antarctic as the last great wilderness on earth. Mr Robert Swan’s lecture is part of the British Council’s contribution to EcoWeek 2007, which marks 2007 as International Polar Year and focuses on global warming and climate change.
