As an integral division of the Ministry of Development, the General Secretariat spearheads the Greek effort towards development and synchronisation of the Greek economy with the pace and procedures of European integration.
The General Secretariat for Research and Technology:

plans, creates and develops the country's research and technology web through technological and research centres |

develops international collaborations and bi-lateral agreements |

plans and carries out actions towards propagation of technological culture. |
The GSRT supervises and supports various research and technology establishments which contribute towards the country's technological modernisation and economic development.
On its own initiative GSRT has created Industrial Research and Technological Development Companies which offer research and technological services and address the specific production problems of small to medium enterprises which form the largest proportion of the Greek production sector.
Furthermore, four Technology Parks have been created in close proximity to research facilities, with the aim of providing high grade facilities, services and know-how to pioneering industrial units.

NAGREF was established by the Greek state in 1989 with the aim of integrating and co-ordinating agricultural research which was until then carried out by isolated research stations under the umbrella of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture.
NAGREF is responsible for undertaking agricultural research for the development of techniques and knowledge, as well as for making recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture on issues and problems facing Greek farming. It has responsibilities in defining national objectives and priorities with regard to Greece's agricultural policy.
