Sofka Zinovieff was born in London, and has Russian ancestry on her father’s side. After studying Social Anthropology at Cambridge, she moved to Greece to carry out research for her Ph.D. thesis on modern Greek identity and tourism, and lived for several years in Nafplio in the late 1980s. She returned to Greece in 2001 with her Greek husband and their two daughters. Her first book, Eurydice Street: A Place in Athens (Granta 2004), is a fresh, funny and inquiring account of Sofka’s first year as an Athenian and how the family gets to grips with their new life. It has been published in Greek by Dioptra. Her second book is about the life of her controversial grandmother, a White Russian who became a communist, worked with the French Resistance and created scandals in her private as well as political life. Red Princess: A Revolutionary Life was published by Granta in 2007 and is currently being translated into five other languages (including Greek). Sofka lives in Vouliagmeni and is currently writing a novel set in Greece. Join us to hear Sofka tell us about and read from her work. Scots writer, Paul Johnston, will present Sofka and discuss her writing with her. There will also be a question and answer session, offering you the chance to engage directly with Sofka. The event will be held in English. Admission free.
