ARRRGH! MONSTERS IN FASHION

We're delighted to present an exhibition entitled ARRRGH! Monsters in Fashion, organised by the cultural organisation ATOPOS Contemporary Visual Culture (ATOPOS CVC) at the Benaki Museum.

The exhibition, curated by Vasilis Zinadiakis and ATOPOS (CVC), explores the growing influence of contemporary character design on fashion. Emerging and established fashion designers are redefining the relationship between the body and clothing and between the potential of the human body and our perception of 'What is Monster?', combining new visual and dress codes of communication.

The designers and artists experiment, give shape to fabrics and clothe the human body creating hybrid creatures with supernatural forms, vibrant colours and abstract features that take you by surprise. These experimental creations set the scene for a unique and imaginary environment providing renewed views of fashion and redefining our perceptions of visual culture.

ATOPOS CVC will present creations by established as well as up-and-coming designers and artists such as: Alex Mattsson, Ara Jo, Bronwen Marshall, Cassette Playa aka Carri Mundane, Gary Card, Craig Green, Holly Fox Lee, Dr NOKI’s NHS, Dharma Taylor, Luis Lopez Smith, Piers Atkinson, Alexis Themistocleous, Walter Van Beirendonck, Bart Hess, Jean-Charles De Castelbajac and Issey Miyake among others.

In parallel with the exhibition, we are organising a series of activities led by UK-based artists Anklepants, Alex Mattson and Caroline Evans.

The exhibition and workshops are being organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the City of Athens, the Ambassade de France en Grèce and the Embassy of the United States, Athens, as part of the Athens Festival 2011, with the support of the Institut Français d'Athènes, the British Council and the Athens Every Week.
