The creative power of the city – Design and fashion in theory and practice The creative industries sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in Europe. In the UK, the creative industries contribute 3% of the country’s GDP and are recognised by the UK government as a priority sector for their potential to contribute to the stimulation of the country’s economic growth. In such times of economic crisis and uncertainty, what is the role of the creative industries in the development of our cities? As part of a week-long series of activities in various spaces in Thessaloniki from 2–8 March 2012 with the participation of hundreds of artists in fashion and design, don’t miss the discussion we are organising in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Thessaloniki, Parallaxi Magazine and the 'Thessaloniki Allios' team on Thessaloniki’s creative economy entitled Made in Thessaloniki. Attempting a multi-faceted theoretical approach to the creative economy, well-known Greek and international professionals from the field of creative industries and design will take part in a discussion focussing on design. Rosalyn Benjamin, who is of Greek origin and our guest speaker from the UK, will present the theory behind the creative industries and the particular role of design in this area. In her presentation, Rosalyn will examine some successful examples of European projects in Portugal, Russia and the UK which she has taken part in. Her presentation will be in Greek. Rosalyn Benjamin Her primary research areas include cultural policy development and evaluation; the role of creative and cultural industries in society and their contribution to the wider economy; designing and implementing mapping and cultural planning research; and cultural education as a key factor in increasing attainment, raising aspirations, ambitions and fostering intercultural understanding. Working internationally, Rosalyn has led a range of projects in countries including Russia, Estonia, Portugal, Lebanon and Greece. Rosalyn has an MA in Enterprise and Management for the Creative Arts from the University of the Arts, London, and has trained and practised as an illustrator. Her previous experience includes the British Council's Creative Economy Unit in London, the Greek advertising sector as well as a six-month exchange programme in the Communications Department of Roskilde University, Denmark.
