PAUL JOHNSTON CRIME NIGHT IN THESSALONIKI

In collaboration with Konstantinidis Bookstore, we proudly invite you to a crime literature event hosted by distinguished Scottish crime writer Paul Johnston.

Johnston will read extracts from his novel The Last Red Death, set in Greece, and answer questions relating to his work.

The Last Red Death
Two business men are murdered in Athens. A piece of olive wood, the trademark of Greek terrorist group IRAKLIS, is found with the victims' bodies. Grace Helmer, whose father was murdered by IRAKLIS, employs half-Greek, half-Scottish private investigator Alex Mavros to track down her father's killer.

Paul Johnston
Paul Johnston was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1957. His father Ronald was a successful thriller writer. Paul studied ancient and modern Greek at the University of Oxford, then added an M.Phil in comparative literature to his M.A.

After leaving Oxford in 1982, Paul worked for shipping companies in London and Belgium. He moved to Greece in 1987, working on a newspaper, in shipping and then teaching English. His daughter Silje was born in 1988. He started writing seriously in 1989 when he went to live on the small Aegean island of Antiparos. Paul returned to Edinburgh to do another master's degree in 1995 and then started studying for a doctorate.

His first publishing contract came in 1996 and he was able to become a full-time writer in 1998, following the critical and popular success of Body Politic, the first of the Quint Dalrymple novels. Paul became widely known to the Greek public when his crime novels Body Politic (1997 John Creasey Award for Best First Crime Novel) and The Last Red Death (2004 Sherlock Award for Best Detective Novel of the Year) were translated. He has published eight novels. He now divides his time between the UK and Greece. He has a Greek wife and they have recently had a daughter, Maggie.

The event is open to the public and will be conducted in English.

When: Monday 8 May 2006, 7 p.m.
