ACTION HERO: A WESTERN/WATCH ME FALL

Don't miss two unique performances by one of the most dynamic performance companies in the UK, Action Hero, who impressed us at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and who we're presenting for the first time in Greece in collaboration with the Bios creative team.

Action Hero is the collaboration between Gemma Paintin and James Stenhouse, who live and work in Bristol, where they have been making performance since 2005. In a very short time Action Hero have developed a reputation for creating innovative and provocative performance that, at the same time, is fully accessible to the audience.

Their work deals with pop cultural mythologies, people being together in a room and the absurdity of standing in front of some strangers and doing something. It often has a sense of the epic, even though it is played out through a raw, DIY, lo-fi aesthetic.

A WESTERN
A Western is a performance for a bar. Action hero locate their valley within the space, their saloon, their empty street. They find their audience and together they make A Western. The audience cheat at cards, beg their hero to love them and then shoot him down. Action Hero apply the ketchup blood.

A Western is a site-responsive piece. When touring, the work is re-made for each venue, according to the specifics of that space.

WATCH ME FALL
Watch Me Fall is for the daredevils. Action Hero tell their audience that they are going over in a barrel, hitting the ramp at 90mph and clearing 10 double-decker buses, and they’re not stopping until every last sonofabitch in the place is cheering them on.

Drawing on footage of Evel Knievel jumps, interviews with Niagara Falls daredevils, the speeches of American presidents and transcripts from Chuck Yeager’s supersonic flights, Watch Me Fall uses the language of Mexican wrestling matches and drag races and questions our obsession with those who attempt the impossible.
