Dr. Ala’a Mekki is a member of Iraq’s House of Representatives. He has been serving as Chairman of the Committee on Education at the Iraqi Council of Representatives since 2006.
Dr. Mekki holds a Bachelor of Medicine and General Surgery Honours Degree from Baghdad University and a Higher Diploma in Clinical Pathology from the College of Medicine, Baghdad University.
He has had a long and distinguished medical and political career in Iraq. He was the founding member of the Thalassemia Centre in Baghdad and the first Iraqi doctor to carry out the separation of stem cells in 2003. He has also lectured postgraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, Baghdad University.
He was imprisoned at Abu Ghraib for 2 years under the previous regime, accused of conducting secret political activity. He has served as a Member of the Iraqi Parliament representing the Iraqi Accordance Front since 2006.
