What is the Global Educators Register?
The Global Educators Register (GER) is a national online register of professionals (not only teachers) with international experience, who are committed to global education and school partnerships, and have a willingness to assist teachers, schools and their communities. The register is free for schools to use.

Who are global educators?
Global educators are professionals who have experience of living and working around the world. They have all worked as VSO volunteers, which means they have lived and worked for usually two years in a Southern country. All the global educators are people who:

  • want to use their experience to help schools to build awareness and understanding of development in classroom activities
  • can help bring a classroom to life with inspiring stories, materials and artefacts from a specific Southern country
  • can support schools in planning how to introduce a global dimension into the school curriculum or,
  • have been through the process of setting up and managing a successful global school partnership.

Who can use the register?
Teachers who want first hand experiences of developing countries to illustrate class work or inspiring stories, materials and artefacts from specific countries. Schools who want to link or twin their school with another overseas or who want to promote a global element into the curriculum.

Where have global educators lived and worked?
Africa, Asia, eastern Europe, the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

What help can I get from global educators?
Global educators can visit your school for a talk or to help set up a linking project, or working closely to provide advice to help embed a global dimension into the curriculum.

What are the benefits of using the register?
The GER can help teachers bring a global dimension into the classroom, through many subjects, with real experiences and materials. Global educators can also help schools link up to foster understanding and combat prejudice.

What are global educators’ areas of expertise?
Global educators collectively have experience in the UK and internationally of many aspects of education, in primary, secondary, special education needs and management.

How does it work?
VSO actively encourages its returned volunteers to sign up with the register. Teachers can then search the register for free for global educators who live close to their school. The register will then put the teachers in contact with the closest appropriate global educator.

Who can I contact for more information?
Please contact Leena Vadher at ger.admin@vso.org.uk.
