British Council connects people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and build lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.
As part of our education and training activities we have administered school linking grants on behalf of the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) since 1998. We now continue to distribute grants through the DFID Global School Partnerships programme, but the scope of our work is now far greater thanks to the involvement of consortium partners VSO, UKOWLA and Cambridge Education Foundation.
We provide advice and guidance, accredited professional development opportunities and grants to schools in the UK and in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America that use school partnerships to develop a global dimension in the curriculum.
The programme is built around a core set of values, reflecting our common belief that if they are to be effective in raising awareness of global development issues, school partnerships must be based on mutuality, equality, learning and sustainability.
A direct school to school partnership, with reciprocal visits by teachers, joint curriculum activities and the involvement of local communities can breathe life into the classroom learning experience. The personal contact generated between young people separated by thousands of miles can have a transforming impact in building understanding and unity.
The British Council is the lead partner in DFID Global School Partnerships, and we manage the programme from our office in Edinburgh, Scotland.
