How to apply for a Chevening scholarship
Everything you need to know to apply for Chevening

How do I apply?
You can download an application form from this website or you can pick up a copy from one of our offices in Accra or Kumasi. You can fill this form in using black or blue ink, or by typing your responses.

Each application form must have the following attached:

one signed passport-sized photograph of yourself
photocopies of any academic certificates
letters of reference from two professionals.

The British Council in Ghana will arrange for visas for all successful applicants for the length of the scholarship. However, you will need to fill in the visa form yourself and provide a valid Ghanaian passport.

You can photocopy the application form when applying but the copy must retain the clarity of the original form.

Short-listed candidates will then be asked to attend an interview.

When do I apply?
Applications for the 2007/2008 scholarship scheme have started!

You can only apply after you have graduated and worked in your chosen field for at least two (2) years. If you are a recent graduate or are just about to graduate, you cannot apply for a Chevening scholarship.

Successful candidates will be informed about six weeks after their interview, usually in February or March.

The year of your study will begin in the year after your application. For example, students who apply between October and December 2007, will begin their study in the UK in September or October 2008; for the 2008/2009 scheme.

What we look out for
Applicants are selected upon merit, initially on the strength of your written application and your academic qualifications. You shoud:

  • ideally have a minimum of an upper second class degree
  • be under 35 years of age at the time of the application
  • be resident in Ghana at the time of the application
  • have a strong personality as well as ambition and leadership skills.

*Please note* There is a £12,000 ceiling on tuition fees for Science and MBA programmes. Applicants will have to pay the difference.

More application details
1. Due to the large number of applications we receive, we can only notify short-listed candidates; we do not acknowledge receipt of applications.

2. Please use certified and true COPIES of certificates and other application material, as originals will not be returned.

3. We do not provide an explanation to unsuccessful candidates; please assume that you did not meet the full desired criteria if you are unsuccessful.

4. The decisions of the selection committees are final and will not be reversed.

5. Pre-departure briefings, visa formalities and any other meetings will be co-ordinated by the British Council.

If I am successful
If you receive a Chevening scholarship, you will be expected to study in the UK for one year only, in the academic year following your application.

The award will cover all your basic living costs, including accommodation, tuition fees, travel, food, clothing and book expenses. These are offered at a standard UK rate and are designed to help you live a comfortable lifestyle, comparable to a UK Postgraduate Scholar (for example, you cannot expect to be able to run a car using your funds).

The award is designed to cover basic living costs for one person. Therefore, it is expected that you will not bring any family members to the UK during the period of your scholarship. It is expected that most of your time will be spent studying.

You will not be able to work permanently in the UK once your course is finished. However, Chevening scholars are encouraged to become involved with work experience during their course.
