 Dancers in a pose
A jubilee dance and jubilee stamps  to mark our 60th.
Some memorable events in Ghana
dancers performingAs part of our 60th Anniversary, (1943 - 2003,) celebration, we sponsored a dance workshop led by UK-based dance artist and choreographer 'H' Patten. 'H' is an experienced choreographer, filmmaker, visual artist, storyteller and performer who has worked with top Black dance companies in Britain, Africa and the Caribbean including Kokuma, Irie, Adzido and Ghana Dance Ensemble. The workshop worked on discovering dancing talent from all over Ghana and bringing them together with dancers already chosen from Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon and Sierra Leone. The mutual relationship in creativity, between Ghana and the UK, was demonstrated when internationally renowned Ghanaian choreographer Francis Nii-Yartey was roped in as the local consultant.

The workshop culminated in four stage performances; one at the National Theatre, in Kumasi, at the British Council Accra auditorium and a final one in Abuja, Nigeria.

In collaboration with the Ghana Post Company we produced five commemorative stamps to illustrate a range of activities that we engage in.
four stamps

A ¢5000 stamp to represent leadership through sport, which depicts a UK volunteer training young Ghanaians to be football coaches and peer leaders as part of our Community Sports Programme.

A ¢3000 stamp to represent a window on the world.  From books to the Internet, British Council has always been about learning in Ghana. Over the last 60 years, Ghana’s leaders and professionals have depended on British Council libraries in Accra and Kumasi.

The ¢2500 stamp represents partners in culture. The British Council works with Ghanaian artists, performers and producers to set up partnerships and networks in the arts.
