The village des sciences is one of the numerous events organised for the Fête de la Science in France. This year this event is also included in the double-decker bus journey organised for the "British Week".

What is the "village des sciences" about?
Open to all, it brings together researchers from all disciplines who present their work to the public through displays, interactive activities and discussions.

When and where can you attend this event?
It will be taking place in the Jardin du Luxembourg on 13, 14 and 15 October, from 9.30 to 18.00. Entrance is free.

What is the British Council presenting this year?
You will not believe either your eyes or ears!

Look !
Researchers from the University of Sussex, the University of York and City University London have teamed up to produce a series of demonstrations based on optical illusions which each reveal an aspect of the science of visual perception.Fun, but with a serious purpose, these illusions will provide visitors with an insight into how our brains decode and interpret visual stimuli, and particularly the way in which we perceive movement. Listen !
A team from the Ear Institute, University College London led by Professor David McAlpine has devised an exhibit which focuses on the way in which our brains enable us to hear sounds.  Through computer demonstrations and simulations visitors will be able to listen to sounds and understand how sound information travels up the auditory system from the ear to the brain, and how the brain can decode and understand this information.  There will be particular emphasis on how the brain works out where a sound is coming from (“spatial location”), how we manage to hear in noisy environments and what goes wrong when hearing loss occurs.  This display has been specially adapted for the Village des Sciences from the exhibit which was selected for the prestigious Royal Society Summer Exhibition 2004.
