TEACHING CENTRE - FAQs ADULTS
2011

Adults
How can I register in a course? How can i know my level? how can i book a placement test? how long is the placement test? do you charge for the test?

If you already have a Cambridge or IELTS certificate less than 2 years or a British Council test result of less than a year old, you will be able to register directly in a class at the appropriate level from 7 June 2010, during our opening hours depending on places available.

If you do not have a valid certificate or test you will need to take a placement test to determine your level.

You can book a placement test here. from 5 May 2011.

Please note that the test can take up to 2 hours and we do not charge for the test.

Once your level is established, you will be able to find out about availability of places in classes at your level and to fill in your enrolment form to register at the Teaching Centre reception on the 4th floor.

Please note that priority is given to students already enrolled in our courses during the Academic Year 2010-2011.

We remind you that a placement test does not guarantee a place on a course.

Due to the success of our courses, we cannot guarantee that a place in a class will be available at your level or at the time you require.

You can pay by cheque or by cash (please bring the exact amount). Our centre does not currently accept bank card payments.

Can my course fees be paid for by ‘formation continue’, ‘DIF’ or ‘subvention’? What is the process to have fees paid by my company or another organisation? When can I get a quote for my company?

We allocate a very limited number of places on our annual courses for sponsored students. Please follow the procedures below:

  1. Your level is established by a certificate or a placement test.
  2. A place in a suitable class at the correct level is available.
  3. You fill in a registration form. You pay 30 Euros (non-refundable) and give us the details of the company or organisation which will be paying your fees.
  4. We will prepare the quote for the company. This document will be sent to you by post. You should send it on to your the enterprise or organisation responsable for paying your fees.
  5. The company sends a letter accepting payment of the fees and specifying the amount they will pay.
  6. Your place in the class is confirmed.

Please note that we must receive a written confirmation of payment by the end of June 2011. The student is responsible for paying any part of the fee not paid by the company. This part must be paid by the student immediately after the confirmation of payment from the enterprise is received by the British Council.

How many hours is a course, when are courses run and how much do they cost?

Our General English, Business English, Conversation and Cambridge Exam classes are one year courses which run from September to June each academic year and represent 60, 90 or 120 hours a course (2,3 or 4 hours/week)

For further information on our course timetable and fees, please consult our programme 2011/12  on our Adult courses page

What is the difference between the courses?

General English
We offer General English courses at all levels from Elementary (A1) to Advanced (C1). Each course covers the four main skills: reading, writing, listening comprehension and speaking, at the appropriate level.  Emphasis is also placed on helping you to develop your vocabulary and pronunciation, and to learn the appropriate skills and strategies needed to become a more effective learner.

Exam Preparation
We offer Cambridge exam preparation courses at Upper-intermediate (B2) level for the First Certificate Examination, at Advanced (C1) level for the Cambridge Advanced Examination, and at Proficiency (C2) level for the Cambridge Proficiency Examination. These courses consolidate and develop all aspects of the English language, and help you prepare effectively for the exam using authentic exam papers.

Business English
We offer Business English courses at Intermediate (B1), Upper-intermediate (B2) and Advanced (C1) level. The courses provide training in key business communication skills.  Although these courses are not exam preparation courses, the material covers the grammar and vocabulary tested by the Business English Certificate (BEC) exam.

Conversational English
We offer English for spoken communication for students at Intermediate (B1) to Advanced (C2) levels who want to develop their fluency and understanding of spoken English. This course will provide practice in speaking and listening as well as improving pronunciation and confidence in speaking.  The course also includes work on vocabulary as well as communication strategies to improve students’ ability to interact in conversations and discussions in English.  The Advanced level (C2) class will focus on current affairs and literature in order to stimulate discussion.

IELTS 45 hour preparation course
We offer this IELTS 45 hour preparation course  each semester, starting in September or January, to students at Upper Intermediate (B2) level and above to prepare for the academic module of the IELTS exam. This course develops both language skills and exam techniques for the IELTS exam and helps you prepare effectively for the exam by using authentic exam papers.

Do you have intensive courses for adults?

From 2011 we are offering any several types of intensive courses  Please refer to our internet page Intensive English for adults

Are there adults courses at the same time as classes for children and teenagers?

The adult classes start and finish 30 minutes later than the classes for young learners in the evenings. There are no classes for adults on Wednesdays. Saturday morning adult classes are at the same time as some of our classes for young learners and Saturday afternoon adult classes are at different times.

How many students are there in each class ?

Usually there is a maximum of 16 students in each adult class, though in certain exceptional circumstances this may go up to 17/18.

What will be the level of the students in the class?

Our classes are organised by level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages so the students in the class will be around the same level.  However, some students are stronger in certain skills than others so there may be a range of different abilities in any class.

Are the teachers qualified ?
All our teachers have recognised teaching qualifications.
What will I study in these courses?
