THE ANGLO-FRENCH YOUTH CONFERENCE 2007 |
 |

 |
This 4th meeting under the Anglo-French agreement signed in Paris by the respective ministers of education, took place in Hothorpe in Leicestershire. The theme of the conference was “Sport, Media and Ethics” with a strong emphasis on rugby in view of the project “Parlez-vous rugby” and the World Cup that will be held in France in 2007.
80 pupils were chosen to attend the conference, made up of 38 from the European Sections of 6 lycées in the académies of Strasbourg and Bordeaux, accompanied by 6 teachers, and 42 English pupils studying for A levels, mainly from Leicestershire and Gloucestershire.
K Several preparatory bilateral meetings were held between organisers of the projects and the conference organisers, so that the projects would become integrated into classwork throughout the year. Each person’s role needed to be clearly defined and a citizenship dimension introduced into each class. There was an emphasis on preparatory work on handicapped people in sport.
The pupils were divided into 8 Anglo-French groups of 8-10 people, and worked in consecutive workshops (Fitness and Health, Media, Equal Opportunities and ethics) under the supervision of French and English facilitators.
This work, both constructive and educational (tests of nutritional intelligence, calculating the body mass index, healthy life-style, discussion around the content of a children’s magazine), alternated with full group sessions including activities such as quizzes on handicap, sport and brand names; a conference on the “Prince’s Trust” in Africa, and a talk by a gold medallist at the Paralympic Games.
At the end of the workshops the pupils, in teams, presented their work on the three themes to a round-table of four experts, including Rob Walker, sports journalist, Marc Woods, Paralympic athlete, Véronique Moreira, of the Scholarugby project at USEP, and Thomas Rouchié, communicatios officer at DGESCO.
During the conference French and English schools paired-up with a view to partnership.
The work of each group will lead to the designing of a calendar for the start of the 2007 school year, and also of a board game on the sport of rugby aimed at primary school children.
As well as the work done on language, on oral presentation in public, and on cooperation in groups, this conference provided a rich source of opportunity for human contact and for debate on the themes chosen for 2007
