Debates will often be in the form of a Café Scientifique event that encourages audience participation and open discussions. Lectures, seminars, panel discussions and youth conferences are also being planned for some countries.
Members of the public, expert speakers and British Council centres around the world are planning debates in their cities.
Globally almost 50 per cent of the Earth’s inhabitants now live in cities – and the UN predicts this will rise to 60 per cent by 2030. We live in a world that is increasingly urban. In 2000, the world’s population passed six billion people, and (according to UN statistics) is now growing at a rate of 1.2 per cent, or 77 million people per year.
We need to start talking about the issues and raising awareness.
Events will take place during 2005/06 in over 100 cities around the world.
