This month’s cubed discovers new research being carried out into creating an ‘invisibility cloak’. Professor Ulf Leonhardt, who holds the Chair in Theoretical Physics at The University of St Andrews, will spend the next two years working on a blueprint for a cloaking device. Leonhardt’s work approaches the idea of invisibility through looking at optical illusions brought about by the bending of light, such as a mirage seen in a desert. He believes that the key to developing a functional ‘invisibility cloak’ is through the development of modern metamaterials.
