Vietnam Partnership

Dear colleagues

Warm greetings from Vietnam!

Another year of the EducationUK Partnership is coming to a close. We are very proud and privileged to have worked with you during the last 12 months to increase the UK's market share for international education in Vietnam. Through working with all 80 of you this year, 28 from further education and 52 from higher education, we have been able to give Vietnamese students a variety of choices, either via the FE Touring Exhibition, the annual EducationUK Exhibition, through our PR and promotion campaigns or via your own marketing activities in Vietnam.

HESA data suggests a 16% increase in the number of Vietnamese students in the UK in 2006/2007, reaching a total of 1,700. This number is expected to further increase this year as visas granted by the British Embassy for students in 2007 reached 1,735, an increase of 24% compared with 2006.

The year ahead is full of challenges and opportunities for growth. GDP growth for Vietnam in 2008 is projected at 8%; high-level bilateral agreement on education has been made between the UK and Vietnamese Governments; and increased funding is available at both central and provincial government levels for masters and PhD training overseas, including the UK. All in all, we anticipate that these will open up further opportunities for you to succeed in this exciting and growing market.

Significant investment in Ho Chi Minh City will be one of our priorities this year. A TV programme will be broadcast for six months from August to increase interest from students in a market which is believed as "the US market"; and a market research will be conducted in April to identify target groups to guide our marketing strategy for HCMC.

Please read on for further details about the ever-changing Vietnam market, and we hope to see you all at the next meeting with members of the Vietnam Partnership on 4 June in London.

Best wishes from all of us,

The EducationUK Vietnam Team
