Independent chair
Role and responsibilities

To act as the independent Chair for the meetings of the Operating Board and the Executive Board of the Partnership
To lobby, influence and network on behalf of the interests of the Education UK Partnership and the broader context of its interests and work
To attend the annual Development Conference and chair the Annual General Meeting
To attend selected other Education UK Partnership meetings, conferences and events, as agreed with the Education UK Partnership Operating and Executive Boards
To be a member of the British Council's Education and Training Advisory Committee and the Higher Education Forum


Eligibility
Candidates for appointment as Chair shall:

Have extensive experience and knowledge of international education and global student mobility, as well as familiarity with the external environment and key policy and strategic issues associated with the field of international education
Have experience of operating at a senior level, and the authority and credibility to be able to network effectively with appropriate individuals and organisations at a senior level in education, government, business and other fields relevant to the work of the Partnership
Demonstrate knowledge and experience of, and engagement with, the issues and concerns relating to international education and specifically marketing, recruitment, welfare and support of international students in UK education institutions
Preferably be familiar with the work of the Partnership and / or the British Council
Not be a current member of staff of an organisation which is a member of the Partnership, that is, they will not be employed by a current Partnership institution nor by the British Council


Appointment
The Chair of the Committee will be appointed by the Partnership for an initial period of two years, with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term of two years.

The appointment committee shall be the Partnership Executive
The Chair will receive an honorarium respect of their role as Chair
The Chair is required to disclose any interests which may impact upon the performance of this role
Ultimately, the Chair is responsible to the Deputy Director General of the British Council
Support for the Committees and for the Chair's work on behalf of the Partnership to be provided by the British Council's Education UK Marketing Division


Secretariat
The Secretariat for the Board of Directors will be the British Council, headed by Director Education UK Partnership. The duties of the Secretariat include:

Ensuring the Board of Directors carries out its principal functions in accordance with its terms of reference
Keeping the Chair and Board members briefed on policy and financial matters at all times
Preparing and circulating papers for meetings of the Board of Directors and agreeing and circulating minutes to Partnership country directors and subscribing institutions
Making arrangements for working panels to conduct their business and making regular reports on this business to the Board of Directors
Making arrangements for consultative meetings and the Annual General Meeting of all subscribing institutions once a year
