IELTS - English for International Opportunity

IELTS – the test that sets the standard
IELTS – the International English Language Testing System – is the leading English language test in the world for higher education and migration.

It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL, the British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. Between them, they have more than 150 years experience in English language testing.

Record popularity
IELTS is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world. The past year has seen a record one million+ candidates from over 120 countries take the test, making use of the 500+ IELTS test centres worldwide.

In the UK, IELTS is recognised by almost all higher education institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge University, and an increasing number of further education colleges with higher education provision.

Overall, IELTS is recognised by 6,000+ educational and professional institutions worldwide, including 2,000 in the US including all Ivy League institutions, most Australian and New Zealand universities, and an increasing number in Canada.

IELTS is also now being widely used by European students embarking on exchange programmes to the UK.

Test of choice
Developed and refined by linguistic and cultural experts over the last two decades and backed by world class research, IELTS is the test of choice for UK universities and colleges of higher education.

It provides a trusted, secure and accurate test of an individual’s ability to communicate in international English. As such, IELTS enables institutions to excel by ensuring students are well equipped to shine at what they choose to study, regardless of what their first language is.

The test has reading, writing, listening and speaking papers to provide a realistic and fair means of assessing a candidate’s English language ability. The IELTS Quality Assurance and Examiner Management Systems ensure that results are consistent wherever and whenever the test is taken.

IELTS uses a nine point scoring system to measure and report test scores in a consistent way. Candidates receive scores for each of the fours language skills and an overall Band Score on a scale from one (non user) to nine (expert user).

Support and partnership
IELTS works in partnership with recognising institutions and is able to provide guidance to help them set the right IELTS Band Score to ensure their international students get their academic and campus life off to the best possible start.

Institutions can download results electronically.

IELTS is the test you can trust, with stringent test security and a unique online verification service. The free IELTS Test Report Form Verification Service is available on the IELTS website and enables registered organisations to authenticate test report forms in a quick and easy way to safeguard against fraudulent report forms.
