William Archer, Director, i-graduate
i-graduate founder William Archer directs the world’s largest study of international students. Since 2005, his team has gathered feedback from over 300,000 students on behalf of university and college partners in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, North America and Europe. With insights from 187 nationalities, i-graduate benchmarks the student experience and compares attitudes and aspirations around the world.

Will worked previously for 15 years as an adviser to multinational corporations and governments on international recruitment, researching and recruiting talent across Asia, Africa, North America and the EU. Will is an alumnus of London Business School, a board member of HECSU and a Council member of CIHE, the Council for Industry and Higher Education.

Paula Beaumont, British Council UK
Paula has worked for the British Council for almost ten years in a variety of roles within Training and Awards, including Chevening Fellowships and scholarships. She joined the Education UK team in November 2007, managing the relationship with our European Partners in delivering EU Higher Education fairs in Asia, and more recently focusing on operational and strategic issues related to exhibitions. Before joining the British Council, Paula graduated from Blackpool and the Fylde College with a BA (Honours) in Hospitality Management.

Toby Belfield, Bursar, Ruthin School
Toby is responsible for all non-academic matters at Ruthin School, including student recruitment. He rejoined Ruthin School as Bursar in January 2008, having taught Mathematics and been Head of Sixth Form at Ruthin from 2001 to 2004. During 2004 to 2008, Toby worked for Capita, responsible for the part of the SIMS (School Information Management Software) business focused on the Independent Schools sector.

Robin Bew, The Economist Intelligence Unit
Robin is one of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s sharpest minds, leading the global editorial team. He is an engaging presenter who helps business executives make sense of developments, and he is recognised for his commentary and interpretation of economic developments. He draws from over a decade of experience presenting his views – and defending them – to media and business audiences, Board members and regional management teams. He also shares his perspectives in public forums, major business summits and private client gatherings alike.

Robin Bew has over 15 years experience observing, analysing and forecasting global economic developments. He has overall responsibility for Economist Intelligence Unit’s editorial operations throughout the organisation, leading its internal intellectual debate.

In recent months, Robin has been called upon to contribute to the strategic planning sessions of many leading Fortune 500 corporations. He has also been involved in a number of public presentations, including the Global Borrowers & Investors Forum 2006, Assessing Country Risk and Emerging Markets Challenges for the Frankfurt Credit Risk Banking community and the British Council Education UK Partnership Conference.

Robin is often interviewed for his views and immediate reaction by radio or television media, including the BBC, CNN, CNBC Asia and Bloomberg.

Robin Bew joined the Economist Intelligence Unit, from Her Majesty's Treasury, in 1995 and became Chief Economist in 1997 and Editorial Director in 2006.

Robin’s particular expertise is on risk, global economy, world business environment and the financial services industry whenever key developments happen or there are major announcements making breaking news.

Annie Binns, British Council UK
Annie joined the British Council in January 2002 as Events Manager. She initially managed the programme of overseas education promotion events and was involved in delivering training workshops, both in the UK and with British Council colleagues globally, as well as implementing the on-line applications system for all overseas exhibitions. She is currently leading the strategic communications review and taking forward projects arising from the strategic review of exhibitions.

Tamsin Carey-Lang, Head of International Office (Internal Affairs), Cardiff University
Tamsin Carey-Lang is responsible for marketing and publicity, internal relations and welfare and working as country manager for Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. A graduate of political geography, she subsequently completed an MSc in European Regional Development at Cardiff University, after which, she worked as a research assistant in the field of regional development. Tamsin has worked at Cardiff University since 1996 and for the International Development Division there since 2001.

Dawn Chen, British Council Taipei
Dawn joined the British Council Taipei office in 2003 as an Education Counsellor. Since then, she has been working in the education sector, covering areas such as education promotion, working with local communities, scholarship management, delivery of projects and events. Prior to her time with the British Council, Dawn worked in the United States service industry after receiving her MSc in International Hospitality Management from the University of Strathclyde.

Steph Cosgrove, Senior Educational Development Lecturer, University College Falmouth
Steph is a Senior Educational Development Lecturer and Historical and Cultural Studies Lecturer / Co-ordinator for the BA (Honours) Photography degree at University College Falmouth. Her doctoral research interests focus on undergraduate student persistence patterns in a photographic context. Steph has developed a number of innovative strategies at University College Falmouth to support student retention and promote students' social and academic integration into institutional communities.

BJ Cunningham, Council Member, Business Superbrands
BJ Cunningham launched his first enterprise, The Karma Collection, importing classic cars and Harley Davidsons from Los Angeles to London, whilst still a teenager. This stopped abruptly when the market collapsed. Staring bankruptcy in the face when the market collapsed, BJ formed The Enlightened Tobacco Company and established DEATH cigarettes as 'the honest smoke'.

His verve and growing reputation for challenging norms has led BJ to set up an integrated brand marketing agency, winning clients as diverse as Volkswagen, B&Q, Fairline Boats and Nokia. He is currently developing the luxury shoe designer Georgina Goodman.

Dr Sacha DeVelle, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations
Dr DeVelle’s role as Research and Validation Officer for Cambridge ESOL is concerned with all aspects of IELTS (International English Language Testing System), including the Funded Research Programme, the IELTS Masters award, design and application of new research projects and statistical analyses. Her exposure to both the laboratory and the classroom provides invaluable experience into the learning processes that underlie the IELTS test.

Dr DeVelle holds a PhD in Linguistics (Language Processing) from the University of Queensland, Australia. It was there that she gained extensive experience preparing students for the IELTS examination. She also taught Second Language Acquisition, Theoretical Linguistics and Spanish subjects at university level, and co-ordinated the Psycholinguistics Testing Laboratory for a number of years.

Dr. DeVelle’s research interests include the cognitive processes that underlie language processing at the semantics / pragmatics interface and all aspects of IELTS performance assessment.

Kevin Drury, British Council UK
Kevin is a Business and Project Manager at the British Council, working in a team responsible for the management and development of scholarships and training programmes. He joined the team in 2004, having previously worked in Development Services as a Contract Manager, working on Education and Governance programmes in Africa. Before this, he worked in an HR role, managing the recruitment and administration of teachers, specialist advisers and consultants overseas.

Paul Dyson, ILT Development Manager, Solihull College
Paul is currently working for Solihull College as an ILT (Information and Learning Technologies) Development Manager. Over the last two years, he has been lucky enough to work closely with their International Team. This has given him the opportunity to attend and participate in a variety of overseas exhibitions and school roadshows, the majority of which have been organised through the British Council.

Paul’s commercial international experience has mainly focused on South-East Asia. Throughout this periodm he has also worked with InTREC, an International Training, Research and Educational Consortium, and has been involved in a number of high interest overseas projects in India and the South Pacific which have primarily been aimed at providing benchmarked learning technology CPD training for teachers.

Fan Wenyao, Deputy Director General, China National Education Development and Research Center
Mr Fan has held his current position since January 1999. During this time, he has participated in designing and delivering the Sino-UK Higher Education Co-operation Project, working as team leader of a Chinese expert team on Sino-UK Higher Education Governance Policy.

Mr Fan has worked in the Department of Higher Education, the Department of Postgraduate, the Ministry of Education, and then the Graduate and Degree Office of State Council.

Mr Fan has successively held positions as Deputy Director-General, Director-General, Department Chief and Vice-Chancellor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the Vice-Director of the National 211 Project General Office.

Dr Heather Forland, Head of International Development, Kingston University
Dr Heather Forland's responsibilities include international student recruitment and support, student and staff mobility, international partnerships and the wider internationalisation strategy of the University. Prior to this, Heather was Head of the International Centre at Roehampton University, from 2000 to 2006, and has worked in Higher Education throughout most of her career in a variety of academic and management roles.

Rodrigo Gaspar, British Council Brazil
Rodrigo has been the Education Promotion Manager for British Council Brazil since June 2006. He previously worked as Brand and Communications Manager at British Council São Paulo for two years. Rodrigo has BAs in Economics and Communications, both from the University of São Paulo, and an MBA from ESPM Business School. Before joining the British Council, he worked in the credit card sector and with Internet start-up companies.

Mike Gibbons, Deputy Director of International Development, University of Manchester
Mike first joined the Victoria University of Manchester in 1991, where he worked in a variety of administrative functions, followed by roles with the British Council and in UMIST’s International Relations team. Mike has held the post of Deputy Director in the Division of Student Recruitment, Admissions and International Development at the University of Manchester since its formation in 2004. Although he now oversees all international student recruitment activity for the institution, his original role focused on developing the Division’s work and communications with the internal stakeholders of the newly-created University. Mike is a member of BUILA’s Executive Committee and was recently elected to the Operating Board of the Education UK Partnership.

Jazreel Goh, British Council China
Jazreel joined British Council China as Director Education Marketing Mainland China in June 2004. She began her career in 1994 as a linguistics lecturer with the National University of Malaysia before joining IDP Education Australia as an education consultant in 1995.

Since then, Jazreel has worked in various organisations in Malaysia, Australia and Hong Kong in the areas of international education, executive search and licensing. Jazreel was born in Malaysia and after completing secondary school in Malaysia and senior secondary school in Singapore, she left for further studies in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated with a BA from Monash University and was awarded the Equity and Merit Scholarship by the Australian Government to undertake her MA in Applied Linguistics.

Arlene Griffiths, British Council UK
Arlene joined the British Council in 2006 as Director, Education UK Partnership. Prior to that, Arlene headed the International Office at Cardiff University, where she was a member of the Education UK Partnership Board.

The majority of Arlene’s career has been spent in the commercial sector, starting at Glaxo Holding. She was appointed to establish a new commercial division for Boehringer Ingelheim, working in Europe. As a Marketing and Sales Director, Arlene took on a number of struggling companies and turned these around to become profitable. She has also worked in consultancy, offering strategic business planning and human resource support to a range of international and SME organisations. In 1995, Arlene took a sabbatical in order to complete her MBA at Cardiff University, graduating with distinction.

Steve Harvey, Managing Director, FoundationCampus (Cambridge Education Group)
Steve Harvey has been working in international education since 1990, and his previous positions include Head of the Higher Education Advisory Team at KPMG, UK Managing Director of Study Group, Director of the International Office, University of North London, and the Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the University of Sunderland. He was educated at the Universities of Kent, Bristol and Sunderland, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Lesley Hayman, British Council Japan
Lesley was posted to Japan as Deputy Director, British Council Japan and Education Attachée in August 2004. She has been closely involved in building partnerships between UK and Japanese HE institutions and marketing UK education in Japan. Prior to this, she worked in the Corporate Planning and Performance Department in the British Council’s London office, responsible for developing planning and evaluation systems for the organisation worldwide. Since joining the British Council in 1990, she has worked in the Philippines, Poland and Romania as an ELT Projects Specialist, Finance Director and Deputy Director.

Prior to her joining the British Council, Lesley worked in education, both in the UK and overseas. She worked in adult education in West London for five years, co-ordinating volunteer teachers of English as a Second Language, and has taught English to adults in Iran and Japan.

Juan Carlos Hernandez Azuela, British Council Mexico
Juan Carlos has been working as Education Promotion Manager for the British Council for four years. He has a BSc in Media and Communications from the Universidad Intercontinental, Mexico. Juan Carlos has been working in the education sector in Mexico for more than 13 years, including nine years at Tec de Monterrey, one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico, at their Cuernavaca Campus, working in local education promotion, advertising, and communications, and as Assistant Director of Institutional Image and Communications. Juan Carlos is currently responsible for Education UK Partnership work in Mexico, including the Education UK exhibitions and regional co-ordination of education promotion activities for Latin America and the Caribbean, the school leadership and new tools for learning, and collaboration with the UK Amerlinks project.

Dr Iona Huang, Director of International Student Centre, Staffordshire University
Dr Iona Huang is responsible for directing the support of international students, assisting the drive of internationalisation of HE and developing education partnerships. She worked as an EFL lecturer in China for eight years before coming to the UK in 1997.

Daniel Jones, Deputy Director, Visa Section Beijing
Daniel Jones is Deputy Director at the Visa Section, British Embassy in Beijing, which holds the marketing portfolio at the Visa Section. He has previously worked in the Visa Section in Guangzhou as the Entry Clearance Manager for South China.

Colin Monk, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Business and Marketing, Brighton University
Colin graduated with a degree in Chemistry from King's College of the University of London in 1969, after which he began his industrial career with Esso Petroleum with assignments in ship scheduling, refinery planning and budget co-ordination. He left in 1973 to study for an MBA at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in California, after which he worked for what is now Baxter Healthcare, initially in Chicago in the International Division, for the following 11 years as Controller and then as General Manager of the Brazilian subsidiary and as Assistant General Manager of the French subsidiary.

Colin left Baxter to join a group of other Baxter alumni who had formed a company around new technology in filtration and separation. He established the European business, based in London, participating in one UK and one major international acquisition to grow the business. During this time, he joined the Board of Governors of the local education college, sparking his interest in Higher Education and the gap between academia and the world of work.

This experience led to a career change into Higher Education. At the University of Portsmouth, he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor, initially focussing on the business and marketing area and then moving into international recruiting and personnel and student service areas of the university.

In 2001, he moved to the University of Brighton, working as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Business and Marketing), in order to focus more specifically on building and developing the business and marketing areas of the university.

Carly Moulding, British Council UK
Carly began her career in education by teaching general and business English at private language schools in the UK, Siberia and New Zealand. She then remained overseas, working as a research writer, freelance magazine journalist and, later, project manager in the careers industry. Carly returned to working in the world of EFL when she joined the British Council global IELTS team as the Stakeholder Relations Manager in March 2008. Carly is the first point of contact for UK and Irish IELTS stakeholders.

Michael Peak, British Council UK
Michael has been with the Education UK Marketing Division at the British Council since 2004, originally working with the exhibitions team. For the last 18 months, he has been helping to develop the market information and intelligence provision of the British Council, a role which has involved carrying out training workshops with British Council colleagues globally.

Guy Perring, British Council Malaysia
Guy joined the British Council in Tokyo in August 1998 as an English language teacher. Prior to that, he worked as an insurance broker at Lloyds of London. At British Council Japan, Guy had a number of roles, including Examinations Manager and IT Project Manager. He joined British Council Malaysia three years ago as head of their Corporate Training division, and later joined the Education Team to lead on the Malaysian Transnational Education (TNE) pilot. In August this year, he was appointed Regional Project Manager for TNE. Guy has a BA in American Studies from Manchester University and an MBA from Durham University.

Dr Sue Piggott, International Director, Oxford Brookes University
Sue graduated from Southampton University with a first degree in Physiology and Biochemistry and a PhD in Pharmacology. She was appointed Lecturer in the School of Biological and Molecular Sciences at Oxford Brookes University, then Oxford Polytechnic, before accepting a secondment to Oxfordshire City Council to develop access courses for mature students in local FE colleges. At the end of the secondment, she was appointed Head of Continuing Education at Oxford Brookes before moving into the International Office as Head, and then later International Director with the expansion of the Office. She has had extensive experience in international marketing, including membership and Chair of the Taiwan Panel, and she is currently a member of the UUK International Unit’s Advisory Board and is on the Executive of British Universities International Liaison Association (BUILA). Representing BUILA, she is also a member of the NARIC Advisory Board.

Tom Savigar, Director, The Future Laboratory
Tom Savigar is Strategy and Insight Director at The Future Laboratory, utilising the full time preoccupation with tracking consumer and aesthetic trends he has had since he was a teenager. Tom worked for M&S, WGSN and Nike before deciding not to finish his fashion textile degree in 1999 to join forces with then start-up Sense Worldwide. As co-founder and director, Tom undertook trend research and strategic planning for the likes of IDEO, BBC, Nokia, MTV and VH1, Hewlett Packard, Diageo and SC Johnson.

Aside from corporate assignments, Tom enjoys working with the next generation of designers and researchers. For the last four years, he has been teaching fashion textile students at the University of Brighton how to be keen identifiers of anomalies and the indicators of change, and has formed similar programmes with universities and institutions in Argentina, India, Denmark and Austria. He is currently dedicating time to establishing a designer menswear label.

Mary Catherine Scarborough, British Council USA
Mary Catherine joined the British Council’s Washington DC office in April 2007. She is part of the Education Team in the US, working on Education UK Partnership promotion, USA Partnership services, as well as PMI2. Mary Catherine develops education market intelligence and analysis, and also builds strategic partnerships with US Higher Education key stakeholders.

Elizabeth Shepherd, British Council UK
Elizabeth began working for the British Council in April 2006, and has worked within the Market Intelligence team since August 2007. She has been involved in the development of the Student Decision Making research and the Early Reporting project, as well as carrying out training workshops both in the UK and with British Council colleagues globally.

Gareth Smith, Podium 2012
Gareth is the Further and Higher Education Adviser at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Gareth is seconded into LOCOG part-time from his role as Head of  Podium – The Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games  His role at LOCOG is to maximise the engagement of both sectors with the Games across a number of areas, including the education programmes and the Cultural Olympiad.

Prior to working for LOCOG and Podium, Gareth was the Further Education Manager for the Make Your Mark campaign. Gareth has extensive experience in student engagement after working with a number of organisations, including the National Union of Students. He has also worked in the field of politics, including employment with Senator Edward Kennedy in Washington DC.

Geoff Smith, British Council Brazil
Geoff is Director, British Council São Paulo, and Deputy Director, British Council Brazil. Prior to this, he spent nine years working in Examinations Management in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and prior to that he was Director, Language Division, at a major UK examinations board. He has extensive experience in the education sector, understanding the challenges of promoting UK education in the overseas marketplace.

Sharon Spink, UK Border Agency
Sharon is the Senior Sponsor Manager and has responsibility for a team of visiting officers who will conduct pre- and post-licensing visits. The team is based near London Bridge and covers Central and Southeast London and Kent. They encourage those institutions that will need a sponsor licence under the Points Based System to make applications in good time and works with institutions to enable them to fulfil their obligations as sponsors.

Stuart Taylor, Schools Consultant for British Council UK
Stuart started his career as a teacher who progressed into senior management in secondary schools before moving into the local authorities’ arena in an education advisor capacity. After heading up some national education projects, Stuart moved into the commercial world and developing skills in sales and marketing. He then worked for a FTSE 100 company in private investments, before going independent. Later he returned to education by joining the Mount School in York (an independent girls’school) as the Marketing Director. Stuart is probably best known by Partnershipn members for being the schools representative on the Operating Board until 2008, and especially for being the leading advocate for new services for schools from the Partnership.

Helena A Thorley. Academic Registrar, Keele University
Helena is responsible for international and UK student recruitment and admissions, UK and international partnerships, student records and examinations, HESA, student funding support, and academic conduct and appeals. She has worked in Higher Education throughout her career in a variety of roles, with particular interest in international work and the branding of universities.

UCAS International Team
The UCAS International Team is made up of three International Executives – Irene Finlayson, Kristine Murray and Hasmita Patel — and Head of External Relations Development, Janet Pearce. Collectively, they have many years of knowledge and experience of working at UCAS.

The aims of the team are to provide guidance to international applicants, international admissions and recruitment officers, agents, national and international schools and colleges, through personal visits and production of appropriate materials; to work with stakeholders such as the British Council and UK Border Agency to promote UK education worldwide; to support Partnership member institutions at a variety of international events and conferences; to make regular visits to Partnership member institutions and stakeholders to promote UCAS’ international services; and to help universities and colleges to make the most of UCAS services for their international admissions and recruitment.

Kevin Van-Cauter, British Council UK
Kevin is currently Higher Education Adviser at the British Council, advising on Higher Education policy in the UK, and specialising in the areas of trans-national education (TNE) and education partnerships. He has written several articles and has presented at numerous conferences on the subject of TNE. Previous roles include advising on distance learning policy and marketing UK education.

Kevin graduated from the Open University in 1997 with a BA (Honours) in International Relations and Democracy, and is currently writing his final dissertation for his Masters in Public Administration, also with the Open University.

Dr Lee Zhuang, Director of International Partnerships at Staffordshire University
With an educational background in business management, Dr Zhuang has lectured on strategic management, Chinese language and culture, creative thinking and innovation management, and has supervised research projects at all levels, including BA / BSc, MBA, MSc, MPhil and PhD. He has extensive experience in academic programme development and management, and has successfully developed and managed many international partnerships in a number of countries, including China, Macedonia, Oman and Vietnam. Having researched and published in areas such as innovation and technology management, Sino-foreign joint venture management and cross-cultural communication, his current research interests include the environmental impact of contemporary marketing practices and information overload. He is particular interested in issues such as the impact of cultural differences and educational ethos, as well as the dynamics of international expatriate staff on the operation of trans-national educational partnerships.
