In January 2009, British Council USA commissioned research for UK universities to review US models of alumni networks. Michaels Opinion Research, Inc., then performed qualitative and quantitative research, presenting findings at the USA Partnership meeting in May 2009.

US university alumni networks have long played integral roles in co-ordinating fundraising and public relations efforts, recruiting high-calibre students and increasing the overall profile and reputation. They have been essential to many of the top universities’ success and sustainability over the years. As UK universities expand into the US market and other markets around the world, they too should begin to utilize their international alumni to enhance their brands.

As American students are generally more receptive to alumni relations programmes, the report finds that British Higher Education institutions have a prime opportunity to leverage initiatives targeted at their US alumni. Additionally, the report outlines a list of opportunities for UK HEIs. UK HEIs may consult the US alumni network models and incorporate suggestions from the report to increase engagement with current and future alumni across all markets.
