PROJECT OUTLINE

The project is cross curricular in nature developing different ways in which the issue of waste and recycling can be tackled creating real contexts for the curricular work. Through the use of art, sculpture using scrap, recycled materials the project is aimed at being practical and working with the mind and hands. Digital image editing software was used to share end products with the Maltese partner school.

USE OF ICT WITHIN THE PROJECT

The children use email, presentation software, digital cameras, internet research, digital graphics and manipulation of digital image. Using an artist in residence enables us to use powerful image editing software and share these with our partner school. As the file sizes of the digital art were very large we used www.yousendit.com to transmit them between the partner schools.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

The pupils understanding that the recycle, reuse, reduce message needs to be applied in a creative and practical way. That children as individuals can and must act, to contribute to a less wasteful society. Having a partner school has developed the understanding that this is not only a local issue and as European and world citizens we must act collectively and individually. The pupils gained skills in applying ICT in a creative and motivating way.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID

“Very creative project where the school has shown a passion for student-centred learning supported through the power of having an audience”
“This project tackles arguably the most important element of our planet’s future: the environment. It does so in a “think local, act global” manner, a way that kids can understand and relate to”
