Gender budgeting

We effectively introduced gender budgeting into Ethiopian policy debate, by running training courses for economists, planners and statisticians with Manchester University’s Gender and Development Economics project.

What is the project about?
Gender budgeting has been introduced into the Ethiopian policy debate by running training courses for economists, planners and statisticians with Manchester University’s Gender and Development Economics project. So far, three training sessions have taken place.

Ethiopia constitutes a highly decentralised state, in which economic planning takes place at both federal and regional levels. For the project to succeed, capacity needs to be developed at both these levels. The training so far has provided the stepping stones in the ongoing advocacy for gender budgeting.

Before the end of July 2004, a manual on gender budgeting will be produced. This will be one of the most important outcomes of the project that aims to help the budget process at the grass root level.

At the moment the Ministry of Finance and Development in co-operation with UNDP is taking the idea of gender budgeting further and British Council as the pioneer of this idea has been invited to co-work with these organisations.

Who is it for?
Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Women's Affairs Office, Bureau of Finance and Economic Development, from the capital and region offices.
