Call for applications for 2008/09

BECOME A LEADER
Each year the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government awards a number of Chevening scholarships for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom to Ethiopian nationals who display both outstanding intellectual ability and clear leadership potential.

We are now inviting applications for the 2008/09 academic year.

The number of scholarships available is very limited and competition is extremely high.

Applicants can choose any Masters level course of study in a UK institution apart from MBA qualifications. Successful applicants will need to have researched potential courses and demonstrate how their intended course of study will contribute both to their own career and Ethiopia’s development in one or more of the following priority areas:

legal reform and human rights
public sector reform and governance
conflict resolution
diplomacy and international relations
climate change and environmental governance
private sector development in strategic sectors
the development of the media.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
We particularly welcome applications from well-qualified women and from regional candidates. Preference is also given to candidates who have not had previous experience of international education. Successful applicants are likely to be in the age range of 25 to 38; given the need to demonstrate existing career progression and the ability to lead change on return.

These scholarships are only available to candidates who:

have an excellent record of previous academic achievement, with a good bachelor’s degree (minimum GPA of 2.3)
are in employment at the time of application in a position of strategic importance
have a minimum of four years’ previous work experience which shows progression within one profession and which is relevant to their chosen course of study
have excellent proficiency in English language with the ability to score 6.5 or above in the IELTS test
have the full support of their employer or institution
can clearly demonstrate how their proposed training course will assist with their future career and Ethiopia’s development in one or more of the priority areas given above
show evidence of having investigated possible courses of study in the UK (information on studying in the UK is available from www.educationuk.org or the British Council in Addis Ababa).

Applications which do not meet these criteria or are not supported by the required documentation will not be considered. Chevening scholarships are available for courses between 3 and 12 months in duration and are not available for PhD, MBA or distance learning.
