About the Climate Change Project

What is the Climate Change Project

Climate change is one of the greatest social, economic, political and environmental challenges facing our generation. The debate around climate actions is a strategic objective of the British Council where it seeks to achieve a faster transition to sustainable, low carbon economies.

The British Council’s Climate Change Project in India & Sri Lanka will focus on mitigating the effects of climate change in an urban environment.  It is part of the British Council’s major global climate security project and India is, along with China, one of the top two priority countries for this work. Sri Lanka, with less than 2% of India’s population and correspondingly lower carbon emissions, is a lower priority.

The project comprises three key strands.

Strand 1 – Scientists and green buildings professionals
Strand 2 – Communications professionals
Strand 3- Young Green Crusaders network

The Low Carbon Futures project seeks to

  • strengthen relationships and networks which lead to action on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • increase understanding of the case for tackling climate change
  • increase support for the achievement and implementation of international agreements that address the threats of climate change.

Scientists and Entrepreneurs

This network aims to generate collaborative UK,India and Sri Lanka research and business development in low carbon technology. This project strand will provide opportunities and networking events to share ideas and to build capacity, competitions for the young low carbon scientist and the young low carbon entrepreneur of the year.

Green building professionals

This network aims to engage a core group of municipal officials, architects, civil engineers and urban planners to share experience and drive action in cities, especially in relation to the built environment.

Communication professionals

The objective is to build the capacity of journalists, writers and film makers to understand the issues around mitigation and get across key messages to readers/viewers more effectively.

Young Green Crusaders will drive awareness and action amongst young people who are committed and passionate about environmental issues.
