International Climate Champions is a youth oriented programme run by the British Council in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This programme is part of British Council's global project called 'Climate Generation' which is delivered through a network of Climate Champions across the world. It is directly aimed at young people aged 18-23 and through them will engage leaders and influencers in the society, as well as reach out to the wider community. Climate Generation engages young people with a proactive interest in climate change and wish to take positive action at local, national and international levels.Climate Champions are typically young people who:

I am a final year B.com student from the International College for Girls, Jaipur. Besides being the President of the Debating Society of my college, I am a national level debater. My two years of experience as the NSS leader has brought me closer to social & environmental issues. Recently, after contributing to a Human rights organization, PUCL, I got acquainted with the working of the judiciary and addressed issues relating to the Right to food Act, Right to information Act, AFSPA, et al. I have also been a correspondent with the newspaper, Hindustan Times where I was able to pen my thoughts for the masses. Environmental issues have always been of a great concern to me and I aim to work for the same. I believe in awakening the educated and educating the unaware. |
| I am currently pursuing my IIIrd Year in Chemical Engineering and I am extremely passionate about the environment, specially Climate Change. I was awarded the Prakriti Foundation Award for my work in the field of environment in highschool in 2008. I started the Patiala Chapter of Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) in 2010. The chapter today has an outreach to nearly 7000 people, working to address waste, water and energy issues of the city while also using the power of action to generate awareness about Climate Change amongst the youth. In May, 2011 I presented a research in the field of Carbon Finance ( Post 2012 Analysis of European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EUETS)), as an intern at the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi. I was selected among the 25 young climate leaders from all across India by 350.org for a Climate Leadership workshop in New Delhi in July, 2011. I am also currently involved in organising 350.org's Moving Planet (Delhi), a worldwide rally to encourage people to move beyond fossil fuel on September 24, 2011. I am currently the Youth representative at Himalayan Chipko Foundation, working on the grassroots level project in Tarakeshwar, Uttarakhand to conserve forests by mobilising local youth to take up the cause. I am involved in estabilishing a Global South Youth Network ,which will have youth representation from South Asia, East Asia, Pacific, AOSIS and the African Union and will work in capacity building amongst the youth for effective South representation at Climate Change negotiations. |

| I am Saumya Mehrotra, a graduate from NIFT. My passion for music and issues related to the environment has driven me towards taking a few initiatives.I am a member of the steering committee with the IYCN and also run a website- musicdip.in, promoting independent Hindi & Urdu Rock artists. I initiated ‘battigul’ (www.battigul.in) and my project under that, The Green School Initiative aims at reducing the knowledge gap on Environment & Climate Change between Scientists & Policy Makers, and laypersons, specifically school students, through effective visual and graphical means and easy assessment of stats and figures. |
| I was born and brought up in the beautiful emerald islands of Andaman and Nicobar and hence was always close to nature. I always had it in me to do something for environmental protection and to prevent climate change. I have presented projects at various NGO and governmental platforms. One of my projects regarding watershed development in my islands was selected for the Indian Science Congress held at Ahmedabad.I was Air India's "Rank Award winner" and represented Andaman and Nicobar islands in the student delegation that visited Singapore. I was also part of the governmental student delegation that visited Japan under the "J.E.N.E.S.Y.S." program. I am currently studying to be a Doctor and delighted that my project "A.N.S.W.E.R. (Andaman and Nicobar serves as World's Environmental Roadmap)" was selected for the "International Climate Champions 2011 programme.I am proud to be associated with organisations like "British Council" and "TERI". I will do my best to make this project a success. My motto is "The idea may be local but the thinking is global." |
| I have proposed the project idea APEC (Awareness Program for Eco-friendly Commodities". APEC can take the form of a news-paper report/ website/journal or a magazine. My project idea will encourage consumers to be environment conscious and rational. It will also encourage producers to produce eco-friendly products. I participated in the National Children's Science Congress 2007 for presenting a paper on "Loss of Biodiversity in mining areas of Talcher and conservation". Currently I am pursuing B.tech in electronics and telecommunication. In addition, I am the Vice President (marketing) of an organisation titled SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) for KIIT university which is about social entrepreneurship. I love debating and have participated in various competitions. |
| I have maintained a stellar academic career by securing more than 95 % marks all through. I have received various accolades for outstanding achievements in academic and other extra-curricular activities (quizzes) including the Rajiv Gandhi Chhatra Prativa Puraskar–2008. The NTSE-2008, Senior JBNSTS Scholarship-2010, CSIR fellowship-2010, NIUS (physics) scholar-2011 are some of my other national level achievements. Besides academic achievements I also have a keen interest in creating a sustainable environment. I have been a state winner consecutively in the year 2006 and 2007 in the Green Olympiad, conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests & TERI and later in the year 2008 was awarded by TERI as a senior level mini-environmentalist. Presently I am pursuing for the survival of endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. |
| I am currently pursuing my MSc (Hons) Mathematics and B.E. (Hons) Electrical and Electronics from BITS Pilani K.K.Birla Goa Campus. After being selected as the National Social Entrepreneurship Forum’s Author of Change in 2011, I interned with Waste Wise Trust in Bangalore where I learnt about the importance of waste management and segregation and their implementation in households as well as in corporate sectors. I like travelling, meeting new people and learning new and interesting things. I also love trekking, swimming, reading, horseback riding and music. |
I am presently completing her SYBA in Sociology at Fergusson College, Pune. I have worked with various social organizations dealing with the environment, education, adolescents and slum children. My work has ranged from conducting awareness workshops for the underprivileged to initiating a book collection drive for a government school library. OI am the student co-ordinator of Social Outreach, a college initiative to place students as volunteers for social service in Pune. I will soon be organizing a Spoken English and Vocational Art training program for schoolchildren from slum areas. To appreciate my work, I was recently presented with an award for being the “Best Volunteer” by a city-based organization. I am also simultaneously pursuing advanced studies in Classical Piano and French language. A 3rd year undergraduate student at Fisheries College and Research Institute, TANUVAS, Tuticorin, I have always been more than just a regular student. I was a semifinalist at the Indian Climate Champions 2008, conducted by British Council and a semifinalist in Terraquiz conducted by TERI and MoEF, 2006. |

I have spearheaded a college level award winning investigative project on Sustainability-the Organic farming and waste management way, guided by the NPO, Mythri and INFOSYS Technologies(sewage treatment facility).At the IIT Madras 2011 Symposium, I secured the second place for a paper presentation on “Technology and Transparency in the Government” .I have also worked with CRY on their Right to Food campaign .Leadership has never been alien to me as I was the Head Girl of school in 10th grade. | I am pursuing BTech(engineering) from VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute Of Engineering and Technology,Hyderabad.I am a very jovial,friendly and an outgoing person and possess very keen interest in learning new things. I believe in the fact that if you want to see the change you ought to be the change,and this attitude has encouraged me to be a part of many social groups and NGOs. As a green crusader I have done an event named GREEN CHALLENGE in my college as a part of the national level technical symposium "CONVERGENCE 2K11" and I was overwhelmed with the response. As an International Climate Champion I would like to take up the project "GREENATHON" which aims at increasing the usage of paper bags along with the empowerment of the poor. Thus by motivating people, the project would be very effective in the long run in dealing with the most pivotal pollutant "Plastic". |
| Presently perusing final year in journalism at MOP, Chennai, my experiences with media organizations are many. Bringing out a bi-weekly news letter for a readership of 400, working part time as a reporter at Chennai online and the various activities that I undertake with a group, for the environment, keeps my schedule busy. My other interests revolve around dance, music, reading and languages. Apart from my college projects, participation in paper presentation and debates are also part of my work interests. Working hard towards creating at least a small change in our environment and society gives me utmost pleasure. |
