From beginner to advanced - 5 levels of English exams

Key English Test  (KET) – Level 1

The KET is the first step for young people and adults wishing to progress towards the Preliminary English Test (PET) and the other UCLES main suite examinations. It provides a goal for these people who want to assess whether they have acquired a general basic ability in English.

Preliminary English Test (PET) – Level 2

The PET is the second level for people wishing to progress towards UCLES First Certificate in English (FCE) and the other examinations. At this level, the learners should be able to cope linguistically in a range of everyday situations which require the use of English in their own or a foreign country. Both KET and PET can be taken six times a year.

Cost:  1250 EEK 
First Certificate in English (FCE) - Level 3

The FCE tests general competence in English - it is ideal if you want to work or study abroad or to develop a career which requires language skills (e.g. business, medicine, engineering). FCE indicates sufficient proficiency in English to be of practical use in clerical, secretarial and managerial jobs in many industries, in particular tourism, where contact with English speakers is required. This examination takes place three times a year, in March, June and December.

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – Level 4

The CAE indicates a high level of language competence for candidates wishing to use English for professional or study purposes. It is recognized by the majority of British universities as fulfilling entrance requirements in the English language. Candidates sit the CAE three times a year a year, in March, June and December. The certificate of the exam is valid for life.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Level 5

The CPE indicates a higher level of competence in English. If you are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context and are approaching a standard of English similar to that of an educated native speaker, then this is the exam for you. The CPE exam is recognized as fulfilling entrance requirements in the English language by British Universities and many universities in other English-speaking countries, and by other institutions of higher education and professional bodies worldwide. It takes place twice a year, in June and December. The certificate of the exam is valid for life.
