What is Teaching Knowledge and Development?

This is a teacher development programme that provides hands-on experience of a range of classroom skills and techniques while preparing for the University of Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test.

When is the course?

Full time in 2009:

April 27 - May 5
June 1 - 9

What do I need to take part in the course?

Your level of English must be at least B1 (Common European Framework).

What does the course involve?

Teaching Knowledge and Development is a part-time course. You will have one weekly session over a period of 16 weeks
there is also a full-time option, which takes place in two blocks of eight days each. Total 80 hours.
the sessions will focus on methodology, classroom skills and techniques, language analysis and awareness and the knowledge needed by teachers
you will be set reading assignments and other tasks to complete outside of class
you will also prepare to take the TKT test

What are the course aims?

Teaching Knowledge and Development is designed to:

enable trainees to better develop their learners’ language skills
enable trainees to produce lessons which are well-planned, logically staged and carefully timed
raise trainees’ awareness of features of the English language through language analysis
improve trainees’ classroom skills and techniques
develop trainees’ knowledge of concepts related to language, language use and the background to and practice of language teaching and learning
encourage trainees in their professional development through observation and reflection

What is included on the syllabus?

describing language and language skills
background to language learning
background to teaching languages
planning and preparing a lesson or a sequence of lessons
selection and use of resources and materials
teachers' and learners' language in the classroom
classroom management

How am I assessed?

there is no formal assessment during the course but your tutor will give ou advice following microteaching
you will receive a certificate of ATTENDANCE from the British Council
you will be entered for the University of Cambridge ESOL (CESOL) TKT and will sit the test during or soon after the course
CESOL will issue a certificate to successful candidates

How much does the course cost?

$1,936,000 (Colombian pesos)

When do I have to pay?

Fees must be paid in full when registering for the course.
