ARTISTIC POLICY Upswing works with the human body to tell stories of people, their culture, and the world we all share, using high quality circus blended with theatrical performance, memorable music, and the imaginative use of visual imagery. Upswing challenges assumptions of identity, place, and our relationships with each other by literally turning the world upside down.
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Red Shoes A humorous dance/circus work staged inside a six sided cube drawing. A portrait of three women reconstructing themselves based on judgements around living with a disability. (15 minutes, 3 cast, 1 crew) Loved Up An exhilarating performance fusing hip-hop and aerial dance. Five passionate people explore the meaning of love from broken hearts to soaring passion. (25 mins, 5 cast, 3 crew) Fire Fire Ritualised performance using fire and acrobatics exploring the elemental processes that connect us to each-other (30 mins, 6 cast, 2 crew).
FUTURE PRODUCTIONS Fallen Exploring the themes of alienation and isolation. Fallen utilises music, dance and circus to explore a multi-stranded story. Loved Up II Further development of circus and hip hop hybrid. Incorporating spoken word, video and live music to create an immersive performance experience that examines women’s roles in the urban dance scene. Older New writing, movement and circus. Exploring the process of becoming older biologically, physically, psychologically and in terms how it affects our place in the world.
WRAP-AROUND UpSwing offers skills based aerial and dance workshops as well as workshops on devising physical and circus based performance using a collaborative and exploratory process. The company also offers Q&As.
