ARTISTIC POLICY
Since 1998, Rotozaza has produced innovative, humorous, and risk-taking theatre. Rotozaza often involve different performers every night, often non-professionals who simply agree to follow instructions, live and unrehearsed – a practice that has produced links with artists and venues all over the world. Through strategies such as this, the work carefully confuses reality and fiction, celebrating theatre and doing things that can only be done live. Rotozaza's work is production-light, inexpensive to tour, and can often be performed in the language of the host country.

REVIEW EXTRACTS
A hyper-reality...by creating an entirely private space in the public setting of a cafe, something extraordinary happens.
The Guardian **** (Etiquette)
An almost transgressive tension that is oddly exciting... As with a great suspense film, watching this unusually daring show provides the gradual recognition of being manipulated — and enjoying every second of it.
New York Times (Five in the Morning)
Part of the reason their shows are so gripping is the constant threat of disaster...at the same time, Rotozaza’s work exists in a tightly controlled world.
The New York Times (Etiquette)

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS
GuruGuru
Five participants, each receiving different instructions via their earpieces, in a hilarious interaction with a televised, animated character whose role flicks uncannily between spiritual and marketing guru. By Ant Hampton, in collaboration with acclaimed film-maker Joji Koyama and composer Isambard Khroustaliov. Performed by audience. (‘Autoteatro’ style – see Etiquette).
50 minutes, multiple shows possible throughout a day, 0-2 on the road (* the piece can be posted, without artist accompaniment)
Wondermart
positions lone audience members / performers in a supermarket. Headphones bring them together, through the cracks of consumer culture and into new perspectives, whilst allowing their exchanges to blend into a real and functioning retail space, undetected. By Silvia Mercuriali.
(20 minutes, multiple participants possible throughout a supermarket’s opening hours, 1-2 on the road)
Etiquette
Rotozaza’s first autoteatro work, is a half-hour experience for two people in a public space (eg. café, lobby). Participants wear headphones telling them what to say to each other. Etiquette explores the difficulty of turning our thoughts into words we can trust. Available in 13 languages. (28 minutes, multiple tables can be installed on a 'loop', 0-2 on the road.
Romcom, or the Distance Love Can be Maintained Between Any Two Fixed Points
By Ant Hampton, with text by Glen Neath. An 'automatic romantic comedy' for two unrehearsed actors who wear headphones telling them what to say and do. (55 mins, 2 on the road)

WRAP-AROUND
Rotozaza TOCAR workshop:
Led by Ant Hampton and / or Silvia Mercuriali, the workshop explores both the different ways of implementing their strategy of instructions to unprepared performers, and the many issues it raises. Challenging and fun, the workshop offers a contemporary, use-able and practical insight into the very heart of our fascination with the live act. A shorter ‘demonstration / seminar’ version is also available.
To accompany GuruGuru-An Evening With Hampton, Koyama, Khroustaliov: The team behind GuruGuru present their work as film-maker (two award-winning short films by Joji Koyama), musician (new work by Isambard Khroustaliov) and performance maker (a performance / slide-show by Ant Hampton), and follow with discussion.
