Grace Surman produces entertaining, accessible, and thought-provoking work. Her work consistently interrogates performance and identity, playing with subtleties of appearance and persona in order to question perceptions of identity. Surman places importance on the recognition of how others see us and how we see ourselves. A fascination rests in the liminal territory between the visible and invisible in our lives, informed by our cultural landscapes.

This work examines the role of female assistant to an absent magician; she has to conjure moments of transformation and everyday enlightenment from the materials surrounding her. (50 mins, 1 performer, 2 on the road, contains nudity.)
Slow Thinking
Meditating on acts of becoming, attempting to occupy or own identities, names or labels – becoming the natural, becoming wild, becoming old, becoming furniture, becoming birds. (50 mins, 1 performer, 2 on the road, contains nudity.)
Yournamelitupinneonlights
Relocating the performing body in video, exploring ways of displaying work in ways more akin to a gallery setting to which the audience can return over time. The making of the piece involved performing to camera for over 50 hours. The resulting stop-frame animation gives the impression of the body striving to leave the screen. Seven Easy Pieces Minus Two
A performance work that playfully reconstructs/interacts with witnessed accounts of performance pieces from the last forty years. (40 mins, 1 performer, 2 on the road.)
