ARTISTIC POLICY Srishti creates and presents dance that maintains the authenticity of Indian classical dance and music whilst presenting these forms in innovative ways and within contemporary contexts. Artistic Director Nina Rajarani was awarded the Place Prize for contemporary dance 2006 for her choreographic work.
REVIEW EXTRACTS ‘Her technique is beautiful, her speed and rhythm extraordinary and her feet fascinating to watch. An altogether extraordinary evening.’ The Stage
‘To a deafening torrent of tabla-runs, Rajarani throws in faster and faster routines. The pace is insane, but the classical precision of the dancing never falters.’ The Observer (Quick!)
‘You can’t help but gaze at Nina Rajarani, she has a dedicated look in her eye and an effervescent nature… We are arrested by the verve and joy that suffuse every moment of Rajarani’s choreography…’ Dance Expression
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Play Ball Fast moving and testosterone fuelled, this production houses three pieces centred on “lads” culture’. Traditional bharatanatyam dance and karnatic music by famed composer Y Yadavan is blended within innovative, contemporary contexts. The international cast celebrate being macho through playing football, talking big bucks and succumbing to love. (60 mins, including interval, 9 on stage, 11 on the road.)
Quick! An energised display of eight London businessmen portraying the impatience, aggression and day-to-day mania of city life with break-neck speed and razor sharp footwork. (15 mins, 8 on stage, 10 on the road.)
WRAP-AROUND Srishti offers workshops in karnatic music and bharatanatyam for all ages and abilities. These workshops are available from half day sessions to longer residencies, and often result in curtain raiser performances by participants. The company also offers post-show discussions, talks, advanced dance training for professional dancers, and debate panel representation.
