ARTISTIC POLICY Sound & Fury is a collaborative theatre company directed by Mark Espiner, Tom Espiner and Dan Jones, which draws on the disciplines of theatre, Foley work (the art of creating sound effects for cinema), sound design, music and storytelling. The company’s key artistic interest is in developing the sound space of theatre and presenting its audience with new ways of experiencing theatre and stories by heightening the aural sense.
REVIEW EXTRACTS ‘A work of genius… I remember every moment vividly. Knock-out.’ Independent on Sunday (Ether Frolics)
‘Imbibe this strange, unforgettable spectacle in giddy wonder.’ Daily Telegraph (Ether Frolics)
‘Total theatre that doesn’t just happen all around you, but that, like the dark, ravenous sea, swallows you up completely.’ The Guardian (The Watery Part of the World)
CURRENT PRODUCTIONS Ether Frolics A visceral, provocative, disturbing and sometimes comic journey into the history and contemporary practice of anaesthesia. A collaboration with artists from Shunt. (60 mins, 8 on the road.)
The Watery Part of the World Inspired by Moby Dick, the show is performed in almost total darkness – with lit faces looming out of the pitch black – using surround sound and music, while actors move around the space. (65 mins, 8 on the road, ideally suited to 10m x 7m studio space and an audience of 70–120.)
War Music Poet Christopher Logue’s version of Homer’s Iliad dramatically re-told and performed in total darkness with five actors moving through the performance space with visceral surround sound and music design. (55 mins, 8 on the road.)
FUTURE PRODUCTION Kursk A collaborative project with writer Bryony Lavery and visual artist Mark Anstee, inspired by the Kursk submarine disaster. The audience will be immersed and implicated in the submariner’s world of command and control, secrecy and codes.
WRAP-AROUND Post-show discussions, workshops and residencies. Sound & Fury’s sessions explore the sensorial potential of theatre and the process of layering text to create meaning within devised work.
