Gemini

Gemini’s members are all highly trained professional performers; leading soloists and chamber musicians who are also experienced workshop leaders, assisting others to create music which is then presented in a Gemini concert for students, parents, staff, governors and the interested local public. This is often as part of a residency at a primary or secondary school, a college, university, a music club, arts centre, festival. The concert contains the item(s) composed by students plus a very varied Gemini repertoire of 'classical' items, medieval music, folk arrangements, audience participation and twentieth century works.

The participants are usually involved in performing their own material and starting points for composition is carefully planned beforehand usually in conjunction with teachers. Teacher training sessions are frequently linked in with visits. Pre- and post-project meetings between Gemini and project organisers are expected. The chamber ensemble Gemini is one of the pioneers in work in education and as Music Teacher magazine has said:

'Its pioneering spirit having percolated through almost the entire musical establishment, the Gemini ensemble has mellowed into a confident and relaxed operation, inhabiting with ease the now familiar but stimulating world which envelops both the professional concert platform and the classroom....few ensembles place such a high priority on creating, developing and sharing music with groups of non- or lesser-skilled participants.'

Gemini is Ensemble-in-Residence at Surrey University and Ensemble-in-Association with the Music Department at Exeter University.
