FAQs - Working with us

Our global arts team works with the best of British creative talent to develop innovative, high-quality events and collaborations that link thousands of artists and cultural institutions around the world, drawing them into a closer relationship with the UK.

The areas we cover include music, drama, dance, visual arts, design, architecture, fashion, film, literature, new media, museums management and the creative economy. Arts Group is based in the British Council’s head offices in London, but we also have multi-disciplinary arts specialists based in our offices in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast. We work closely with in-house experts in education, science and other disciplines, with colleagues in over 100 countries in which we currently operate, and with a very wide range of arts and culture organisations and practising writers, filmmakers, performers, designers, artists and creative and cultural leaders in the UK and around the world. Throughout all our work we aim to give a modern, diverse picture of the United Kingdom, and to promote the debate of issues and ideas by challenging opinions and increasing understanding between cultures.

Unlike the UK’s Arts Councils we are not an arts funding organisation. Nevertheless, we do work closely with the Arts Councils, the UK Film Council, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, UK Trade & Investment and others to identify opportunities for collaboration which will meet our different objectives, to ensure that we capitalise on our different strengths, and that we respond to the interests and international aspirations of the UK arts and creative industries sectors.

Working with the British Council

How do I find out what your current projects are?
You can find out about our current projects and activities via our homepage and on the various art form pages. Contact us at arts@britishcouncil.org if you are interested in getting involved in an existing British Council project. Please note that the planning for much of our work is done well in advance.

Do you accept project submissions or proposals?
We are currently developing a channel for external project ideas and proposals called the ‘Ideas Park’. We will have this process finalised in 2009. There are a number of principles which we will adhere to when making decisions: a level of excellence, clarity about the intended target audience, the appropriateness of the work to the target region/country/audience, the ‘do-ability’ etc. You can find out more about the Ideas Park here.

How do I invite a British Council Arts specialist to my show/event/reading/film/performance/exhibition?
Realistically, it is not possible for our specialists to attend all the events they are invited to, but please contact us at arts@britishcouncil.org as far in advance as possible and with some information about the event to help us prioritise.

How we work

Who do you work with?
Advisory Group
We have recently appointed Graham Sheffield as our Arts and Creative Economy Adviser. Graham will work alongside the Director Arts and play an important role in developing and strengthening the national and international work of the British Council across the field of arts and the creative economy. He will also chair our Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group. Graham started work in this role on the 1 July 2009 and will hold the post for one year.

A key part of Graham’s work will be establishing a new Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group later this year, which will comprise of individuals representative of a range of interests across the arts sector. The advisory group’s role will include commenting on opportunities, trends and issues of long-term strategic importance for the British Council and to support us in stimulating and developing new ideas and initiatives. The British Council has similar advisory groups in Education and Governance, English, and Science and Engineering. Find out more about how the British Council works with advisory groups.

You can read more about Graham Sheffield’s appointment here.

How do you decide which artists to work with?
Working with our colleagues and partners overseas, our role in Arts Group is to identify appropriate artists and work. We work with a wide variety of artists who are generally invited to participate in our projects. Who we choose to work with is based primarily on the identification of need and opportunity overseas - for example, is that work the right fit for the intended audience.

In addition to this process we run a small number of formal schemes that offer support and funding for artists including Grants to Artists, Short Film Submission Scheme, Connections through Culture and Artist Links.

Do you have a list of ‘approved artists’?
No. We are always looking out for new creative talent and exciting fresh work. We try to see as much work around the UK as possible so we can keep up-to-date with new developments across all art forms.

What is the Arts Group policy for Equal Opportunities and Diversity?
Our policy for Equal Opportunities and Diversity in Arts Group is the same across the British Council, please check here to find out more.
