We have recently appointed Graham Sheffield as our Arts and Creative Economy Adviser. Graham will work alongside the Director Arts and play an important role in developing and strengthening the national and international work of the British Council across the field of arts and the creative economy. He will also chair our Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group. Graham started work in this role on the 1 July 2009 and will hold the post for one year.
A key part of Graham’s work will be establishing a new Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group later this year, which will comprise of individuals representative of a range of interests across the arts sector. The advisory group’s role will include commenting on opportunities, trends and issues of long-term strategic importance for the British Council and to support us in stimulating and developing new ideas and initiatives. The British Council has similar advisory groups in Education and Governance, English, and Science and Engineering. Find out more about how the British Council works with advisory groups.

The British Council currently has formal partnership agreements with BBC World Service, Arts Council England, Arts Council Wales, Scottish Arts Council, and Arts Council Northern Ireland. Arts Group also has a variety of project-specific partnerships with other organisations and institutions that have an interest in representing UK arts, culture and creative industries abroad – please visit our Partners page to find out more about examples of work we have created in collaboration with others.
Contact us at arts@britishcouncil.org if you are interested in getting involved in an existing British Council project. Please note that the planning for much of our work is done well in advance.
We are currently developing a channel for external project ideas and proposals called the ‘Ideas Park’. We will have this process finalised in 2009. There are a number of principles which we will adhere to when making decisions: a level of excellence, clarity about the intended target audience, the appropriateness of the work to the target region/country/audience, the ‘do-ability’ etc. You can find out more about the Ideas Park here.
If you are interested in a business partnership with us, then please visit the Working With Business page.
Working with our colleagues and partners overseas, our role in Arts Group is to identify appropriate artists and work. We work with a wide variety of artists who are generally invited to participate in our projects. Who we choose to work with is based primarily on the identification of need and opportunity overseas - for example, is that work the right fit for the intended audience.
In addition to this process we run a small number of formal schemes that offer support and funding for artists including Grants to Artists, Short Film Submission Scheme, Connections through Culture and Artist Links.
No. We are always looking out for new creative talent and exciting fresh work. We try to see as much work around the UK as possible so we can keep up-to-date with new developments across all art forms.
