FAQs - Funding

We are a cultural relations organisation and our work aims to build engagement and trust for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between people worldwide. Consequently, the British Council only offers support to arts and creative economy work that is likely to contribute to the development of cultural relations between the UK and the rest of the world.

Other UK-based organisations (such as the Arts Councils) provide direct funding to support artists and arts organisations. We only have a very small number of specific schemes which offer funding or support for artists.

How we work

I am a UK artist and want to work abroad – can you help?
We do not offer support to arts and creative economy work that is unlikely to contribute to the development of cultural relations between the UK and the rest of the world. It’s possible that your work may link up with our activities and projects. If you think this is the case, please contact us at arts@britishcouncil.org in the first instance.

If we are unable to help, you could try contacting the relevant Arts Council in your region, as they have some funding initiatives for international arts projects. You could also try contacting Euclid, who provide an international funding enquiry service.

I am an overseas arts promoter/curator, and would like support in bringing UK artists to my country.
We do not offer support to arts and creative economy work that is unlikely to contribute to the development of cultural relations between the UK and the rest of the world. It’s possible that your work may link up with the activities that your local British Council office is undertaking, so it is advisable that you contact them in the first instance (see our list of our offices worldwide).

My business is interested in the benefits of supporting a British Council arts event.
If you are interested in a business partnership with us, please see the Working with Business area of our site.

I have been invited to an event/exhibition/festival overseas - can you help with the funding?
No, we are not a funding body. However, we do have two schemes which provide specific support in certain instances; please refer to the Short Film Submission Scheme pages and the Grants to Artists pages for more information. Your host in the overseas country can also contact their local British Council office to discuss whether your visit might support activities and projects they are engaged in.

Our Schemes

The Grants to Artists scheme is available to British visual artists to help with the costs of transporting work to an exhibition in a gallery abroad. For more information please look at our Grants to Artists page. To be eligible you need to be a visual artist who has exhibited professionally in the UK and is living in Britain.

The Short Film Submission Scheme enables UK short film-makers to show their films at international festivals. Click here to find out more about the Short Film Submission Scheme. To be eligible, films need to be less than 45 minutes long, less than a year old and have a UK-based director or producer.

Artist Links: England - Brazil is a joint Arts Council England and British Council programme which aims to develop and implement a network of collaborative links resulting in exchanges, placements, joint productions and development opportunities between the UK and Brazil. For more information please look on the Artist Links website.

Connections through Culture: UK-China is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government and Welsh Assembly Government. It offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, aiming to build long lasting relationships and to develop exciting cultural collaborations between organisations in the two countries. Find out how this initiative could help you via the Connections through Culture website.
