Dr Dennis Francis is a regular Erasmus beneficiary and has been going to the University of Calabria, Cosenza in Italy (and the Charles University in Prague) for seven days, every year, for many years, as he has long-standing relationships with both universities. He takes the opportunity to teach, do research, write manuscripts and work on collaborative projects.
He feels it has benefited him enormously, providing a great opportunity to meet staff and students from universities abroad, to see how they teach and how they can work together. It has allowed him to see the way in which different scientists think about projects and has also greatly enjoyed meeting people outside of the University, learning about their cultures and appreciating life from their perspective. A real eye-opener! He is hard-pressed to highlight one particular thing as he explains that all of his visits are so memorable. He advises colleagues to reciprocate the hospitality. Look upon the process as on-going in establishing life-long friendships with respected colleagues and always find the time to meet the local students and do your utmost to encourage them to become mobile through Erasmus.
“Support Erasmus, a wonderful mechanism of exchange!” he concludes.
