Getting Started

If you are from an institution who has recently signed up for an Erasmus University Charter or perhaps a new Erasmus Co-ordinator we hope this page will give you some useful guidance and advice. Many experienced Erasmus Co-ordinators will tell you the role is a very demanding, but also a very rewarding role. It may take you a full academic year to understand the whole programme, the required reporting and your own institution's requirements and way of working, so don't expect to understand everything straight away!

There are several ways you can get help and support;

  • ensure you sign up with the British Council's Erasmus email list service. This will allow you to not only raise questions with the British Council, but also discuss issues and ask questions to all the other Erasmus Co-ordinators. Please contact the Erasmus helpdesk to join
  • The primary source of information about Erasmus and the answers to most queries for University Co-ordinators can be found in the Erasmus Handbook. - the annexes are also available in word format. A new version is created each year with updated information and forms – usually published in August. If you cannot find the information you need please email the Erasmus Helpdesk as above.
  • If you have a specific issue or need to talk to someone at the British Council about the Erasmus programme, you can also call our telephone helpdesk on 029 20 92 4311.
  • Join HEURO (Higher Education European Officers) which is the professional association in the UK for European Officers whose members are all involved with the Erasmus programme. Regular workshops are held to share experience and a regular newsletter and mail list provides another network of support
  • Request to receive the bi-monthly Erasmus e-newsletter via the helpdesk
  • You may find it useful to read this presentation for new co-ordinators that covers topics such as; how to get started, where to find information, contract guidlines key dates and preparatory visits.
  • See key dates of the Erasmus academic year
