BOLOGNA SEMINARS

EVENT INFORMATION

REGIONAL SEMINARS

The Bologna Process is transforming higher education across Europe. Growing modernisation and internationalisation presents significant and exciting opportunities, challenging UK Higher Education Institutions to embrace and implement the change process.

It is vitally important that we engage in a positive way and at all levels for the benefit of our institutions, our students and staff.

The British Council and the Higher Education Academy have recently held three regional seminars in Dundee, Cardiff, and Belfast on Bologna to inform academics of recent developments in the Bologna Process and to engage them in thinking about the implications of Bologna for learning and teaching at subject level.

The events have a particular focus on curriculum development in relation to mobility, study and work placements, and the recognition issues related to mobility and the impact on employability.

Questions on internationalisation and what further steps to take, and on assessing the positive consequences of engagement with the European Higher Education Area are also being addressed by keynote speakers such as Professor Sir Drummond Bone.

Keynote speakers, the UK Bologna Experts, staff from the HE Academy Subject Centres and students contribute to these unique and innovative events.

This international Bologna seminar took place near London on 14 / 15 May 2009 attended by Bologna Experts, tuning representatives and students representing Norway, Poland, The Netherlands, Ireland and the UK.

Three presentations during the plenary session focused on ‘Life Long Learning’, ‘Mobility’, and ‘Doctoral degrees’. These three presentations addressed each topic and the challenges which it presented. This then opened the discussion for the remainder of the seminar, where the participants worked in smaller groups discussing the issues from each of the countries perspectives. Each group recorded key points and suggestions for action which were collected by the rapporteur John Reilly, from the UK.
