ELTeCS news lists
Using the lists and the list archives

There are six regional email news lists (otherwise known as discussion lists), one each for:

Africa and the Middle East
East Asia
Europe, Caucasus and Russia
India and Sri Lanka
Latin America
Central and South Asia

The term 'list' comes from 'listserv', which is a technology that enables email news to be sent to thousands of readers at once.

How do the lists help members?

The news lists enable ELTeCS members to share information about opportunities, events, courses, projects, good practice, debates and ideas. All this - and without taking up lots of your time, too.

Each news list has an Editor, who batches the individual messages in a weekly digest for you. The Editor makes sure that you receive both regionally specific news and news that is of global interest too.

How do the lists work?

1) Receiving a digest from an ELTeCS list is like receiving a newspaper direct into your email inbox.

You do not have to log on to a website or do anything that takes any time. If you have an email account, the digest will be sent to you each time it comes out (usually once a week).

Unlike a newspaper, all the 'headlines' describing the various messages come at the beginning. So you can skim the headlines and decide if you want to read in more detail.

2) Most importantly, you can be the journalist yourself and write a message. You can send it straight to the Editor. The list of the Editors is available on http://www.britishcouncil.org/eltecs-contact-us.htm .Your message will appear in the next digest or one soon after. And all this is completely free of charge as well as simple to use.

3) In addition, all postings are saved in a searchable archive (see below).

4) A small number of adverts are included in the digests. Only adverts that are of direct interest to teachers are included. Adverts are clearly labelled and kept to a minimum, with no more than one per digest. (See below for advertising policy.)

So you'll never feel overwhelmed by ELTeCS lists. Just well-informed and well-connected.

How to receive the lists

If you'd like to receive the news list for your region, and haven't yet joined ELTeCS, you can tell us your choice of list on the ELTeCS membership application form.

If you are a member of ELTeCS already but are not yet signed up to your regional news list, please email eltecs@britishcouncil.org to let us know which one you would like to receive.

How to stay on, and make the most of, your ELTeCS list

1) If you find that 2 or 3 weeks pass without receiving any messages from ELTeCS, this may be because the ELTeCS system has found your inbox full or your email address has changed, and has deleted your name automatically.

- If you clear your inbox and still the ELTeCS messages don't come, please contact your Editor to let them know, and we will re-subscribe you.  The list of the Editors is available on http://www.britishcouncil.org/eltecs-contact-us.htm .

- If your email address changes, please fill in the online application form at http://www.britishcouncil.org/eltecs-join.htm .

2) If you would like to refresh your memory about how to send announcements to the lists, how to use the commands, and how to search the archive, please go to http://www.britishcouncil.org/eltecs-publications.htm ELTeCS info 2006 handbook, and have a look at the article, 'Using the ELTeCS lists to your advantage'.
