There has been an educational institution on the site of the present-day College since 1889 and those buildings still form part of the College buildings. Within the College's main faculties are fifteen schools covering areas as diverse as:

  • Accounting
  • Architecture
  • Design
  • Electronics
  • Hairdressing
  • Science
  • Social Care

Additionally, the College has a Flexible Learning Centre with some 3,000 students on a range of courses, and is presently involved in developing open learning in a number of European countries.

The College runs degree courses as well as professional courses, HNDs, HNCs, NVQs, GNVQs, A-levels and GCSEs. The College presently has 15,000 students (two-thirds of these are over twenty-one years of age) studying full-time, part-time or via flexible learning.
