Media in Society

In its final year of operation the NENA/MED Media in Society programme has gone from strength to strength. Designed to help network media professionals from NENA/MED and the UK to help them work together to raise awareness of key social issues, it has covered print media, photo-journalism, on-line, radio, TV broadcast, animation and cartoons. Supported by the BBC World Service Trust and the Guardian Foundation, hundreds of media professionals have been trained and have attended events in the region and the UK through symposia, training events and study tours. The project will culminate in an exhibition at the Guardian Foundation Newsroom, where over 60 commissioned 'social issues' cartoons and animations from the region and UK, including Steve Bell from the Guardian, will be displayed. Over 1000 key contacts in the UK will also be invited to the exhibition where Neil Kinnock will formally open the event. 1000 catalogues of the cartoons will be produced and a study tour will run alongside the main event with round table discussions between the UK and the regions. Finally an exhibition of all the work under the project will tour the region for the remainder of the year.

Cartoons from Egypt are done by Mostafa Hussein head of the Egyptian Association for Caricature. Here is some of his work.

Issues arising from the Beirut Symposium in December 2005 “Social Issues through the Eyes of the Media“ were a need to enhance the professional skills of journalists in Egypt, a need for networking opportunities, a desire to make the news more accessible through the use of new media and audiences and finally a platform for debate on key policy and legal issues surrounding the media.

Egypt’s programme aimed for media professionals to have enhanced skills in terms of investigative journalistic skills, ethical reporting, accessing information and presentation skills.  It comprised of capacity building and networking events:

Professional Development for Journalists
UK Programme for regional media practitioners
Debate on Freedom to write and publish
Bridging the gap
