Debate on Freedom to write and publish

We hosted a roundtable discussion in collaboration with Egyptian Pen, part of an international association of writers campaigning to promote freedom of expression www.englishpen.org/international.

Gathered together for the event were prominent writers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, union leaders and other civil society activists as well as two visiting delegates from the English Centre of PEN: the prominent writers Jonathan Fryer and Shusha Guppy.

The event provided an opportunity for open and constructive dialogue around issues of literary, journalistic and internet freedom, in order to identify both positive and negative practice in Egypt at the current time, and constructive ways for individual writers and organisations to further promote those freedoms.
