I graduated in Islamic Studies in English from the Faculty of Languages and Translation at Al Azhar University in 2006 with a general grade of ‘excellent’. Immediately after graduation, I found a job at a company called Media International, which plays a significant role in E-Religion and management.
However, since I obtained funding via the British Chevening Scholarship scheme, my academic credentials have been greatly enhanced giving me more options for the future. In essence, Chevening represents, for me, the most important stage in my academic life. Choosing Edinburgh was a matter of practicality. In my field, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Edinburgh enjoys the highest research rating among UK Middle Eastern Studies departments, so it was a natural first choice. Scotland also has an inspiring landscape and is a beautiful, natural environment.
Most importantly I found the people in Edinburgh very welcoming and the university enjoys one of the most vibrant academic atmospheres I have ever experienced. As an international student, it was great to find that the university community was so diverse too. I was really amazed when I found the inspiring mix of students from all parts of the world with different cultures, traditions and religions. Edinburgh has excellent facilities for socialising with students from different backgrounds, and I have met lots of different people here.
The programme really lived up to my expectations. I honestly believe that my Edinburgh MSc has laid down the foundations for my intellectual and professional development. I joined the Edinburgh Middle East society and another academic network in London which I hope will be helpful for my future career. My programme has been very challenging, but I have still found time enjoy Scotland too, which I think it so important.
I was really pleased when I learned that my school had invited me to be a ‘Visiting Scholar’ at the Centre for the Advanced Studies of the Arab World (CASAW), which is the best ending to my masters course that I could have hoped for.
