Changes to our Knowledge and Information Services in Egypt

2009: CHANGES TO OUR KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION SERVICES IN EGYPT: KNOWLEDGE AND LEARNING CENTRES IN CAIRO AND ALEXANDRIA

We are revising our Knowledge and Information Service provision to enable us to meet the educational and vocational needs and international aspirations of many more thousands of customers than we currently can.

In practical terms this will mean a phasing out of our current Knowledge and Learning Centres in Cairo (Agouza) and Alexandria and their on-site general public lending facilities. Our existing customers who are the most frequent users of the Knowledge and Learning Centres - Learners of English and UK Qualifications Candidates in both Alexandria and Cairo – will continue to be served through improved delivery methods which are not solely premises based, enabling us to provide these services to many more people than we currently do.

There will be different schedules for bringing about these changes in Alexandria and Cairo over the next few months:

Alexandria
The Knowledge and Learning Centre in Alexandria will cease its public lending facilities on 17 September 2009. From 15 June to 15 August we will offer one-month memberships to customers. These will be at the cost of LE 15.00 for ‘Standard’ memberships and LE 5.00 for ‘Kids Corner’ membership.

From September 2009 we will continue to offer services and support to UK Qualifications candidates and to customers interested in pursuing these from our office in Alexandria.  We will do this through providing a range of learner support materials for those who are registered with the British Council as candidates for the IELTS examination including the sale of books and the provision of online support.  Full information will be available shortly.

Our team and operation in Alexandria will be developing and taking forward a growing area of our work from September 2009. The British Council in Egypt has refocused and expanded its work in the Education and Skills sector. Our new programme, working with a range of partners and stakeholders, seeks to address Egypt’s priority agenda – Employability – and will be led from Alexandria for the whole of Egypt. This will be achieved through the development of new products and services which serve the needs of the business and industry sector and aim to further meet the professional development needs of a growing number of customers. This includes increasing the take-up of qualifications from the UK and also offering English training to corporate clients.

Cairo (Agouza)
We will cease to offer a general public-lending facility in Cairo and close our current Knowledge and Learning Centre in Agouza on 20 August 2009.

If you are already a member of our Knowledge and Learning Centre in Agouza and your current membership extends beyond 20 August 2009, we will provide a refund of outstanding fees accordingly. Refunds will be available during the period 9 to 20 August.  We will write to you shortly with full information on obtaining this refund.

If you are already a member of our Knowledge and Learning Centre in Agouza and your membership expires before 20 August 2009 and you would like to renew it, we offer you our student membership at the cost of LE30. This will be available from 1 June 2009 and be valid up to 20 August 2009.  Please ask staff for further information.
