British Council invites British pianist, composer and producer Alex Wilson and Italian bass player Davide Mantovani who will perform with the legendary Egyptian drummer Yehia Khalil to share and fuse British and Egyptian music in a joint performance at El Sawy Culturewheel.
Yehia Khalil and Alex Wilson first met during the Jazz Factory, a celebration of European and Arab music, which took place in Egypt in 2008. At that time they decided that they wanted to work together and finally, this year, it’s going to happen.
Yehia Khalil is one of the most respected and talked about drummers in the world as well as being a bandleader, creative producer, star maker and jazz musician. He toured America with a succession of American jazz, soul, blues and country bands and has played with such jazz legends as Oliver Jones, Dave Young, John Lee and Van Freeman. He has played in more than 100 cities in 20 countries during his 40 years career. Yehia’s likable personality and his outstanding performances have changed forever the image of jazz music and musicians in Egypt.
Alex Wilson is a British pianist, composer, arranger, performer and educator as well as being one of the UK’s foremost Latin music producers. He has travelled to over fifty countries to perform music for a multitude of projects. He is a committed music educator and has delivered workshops and master classes for young people both internationally, for the British Council in Colombia, Cuba, Lebanon and Jordan as well as in the UK for music colleges.
Davide Mantovani has gained wide experience on the live and recording circuit since his arrival in London from his native Italy in 1991. He has played with some of the most illustrious jazz and Latin artists around and has carved himself a respectable niche as a top bass player. He has played at some of the best London jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott's, Jazz Café, Pizza Express as well as performing at numerous national and international music festivals.
