Ivor Abrahams b 1935

Sculptor and printmaker.  Ivor Abrahams was born in Wigan, Lancashire and studied at St Martin’s School of Art and Camberwell School of Art.  After graduating he worked for a time as an apprentice in a bronze foundry, and later with the display artist Adèle Rootsteine.  He has rarely made work that is purely abstract and his themes have concentrated on the human figure, the garden and classical landscape.  Advertising placards have held a fascination and the illusion of three dimensions that these convey is brought into his graphics by the combination of screenprinting and flocking.  The artist divides his time between Britain and France.

The flocking in Privacy Plots – Hedge is applied by covering the surface with adhesive and spraying the area with flock fibres 3 mm in length.  These are fed into a hopper and pushed towards the spreading grid by compressed air.  They are then subjected to an electro-static charge causing them to shoot out through the grid in thousands of separate particles.
